This is very well written and very well voiced. The book was better than I’d expected and the when I almost thought I had things figured out, I’d get another plot twist. The entire book from start to finish is excellent.

I struggled with this book. First, the narrator/author’s pacing is just slow enough that I have a hard time paying attention and following. Secondly, while the principles seem reasonable, he buries them in anecdotes and further distracts from them with gimmicky exercises, e.g. flossing one tooth then praising yourself. The book comes across as having a lot of fluff delivered at a tedious pace. I went to YouTube to watch his TEDx Talk on the book at it was no better at all. He still had the audience floss one tooth then jump up and tell themselves they’re “awesome”. For me, this resulted in me still struggling to connect with the principles. I had to go to another video to get the “cliff notes” to get a grasp. He seems to know what he’s talking about, but his delivery just doesn’t flow. Perhaps, he could take some training in how to teach and present. These are PhD level studies presented to an audience as if we’re 3rd graders. The audiobook just didn’t work for me. Maybe you’ll have better luck with it or try the print version.

Wil Wheaton, who you may remember from Star Trek TNG where he played Ensign Crusher, did a very good job of reading this one. The story was well written, but it’s VERY heavy in references to the 1980’s. I grew up in the 80’s so I have fond memories of it, but it got a bit tedious in some parts of the book. It was also very heavy in the Sword and Sorcery imagery. So if that is boring to you, you might not enjoy the entire story. Overall, it had little emotional impact on me. A laughed a couple times, I cussed a couple times, I was surprised once or twice; otherwise, it was fairly unremarkable. I didn’t hate it, but I could have lived my entire life having never heard this story and not missed anything. I don’t miss the characters or the story like I do with some other books.

Firstly, the author narrated this book herself and that was not the best idea. The delivery is painfully slow and her speech is pressured as if she’s constantly trying to impress on you the severity and magnitude of the material. It becomes tedious and it’s not necessary because the actual information itself clearly impresses how immensely serious it is. You really won’t get through this book at normal speed. You’ll have to speed the reading up just to stay engaged. Her voice is nice and not harsh or shrill at all, it’s pretty. She simply reads too slowly and maintains the same tone and energy most of the time. All that said, this book is very sobering. It’s a chilling look at the reality that the world’s governments and militaries have brought us to. This book will tighten your stomach and almost nauseate you as you realize that there are people who think the ability to instantly incinerate millions of innocent children is a worthy goal to pursue. It forces you to face questions about the reality of hostile and rogue nations who feverishly seek nuclear weapons and what they might be willing to do with them. Do they even really understand what they’re asking for? This book debunks many of the myths about nuclear holocaust and what the likelihood and realities of survival would be. It forces you to face the question of whether you’d even want to survive a nuclear holocaust. Is there any preparation worthwhile? Is there any hope? Will there be any chance of survival and a civilization afterward?

I have listened to MANY audiobooks in several genres. The narrator of this book is hands down, beyond doubt, absolutely THE BEST narrator I’ve ever heard! I wasn’t familiar with his name before buying this book. Clearly this man is theater trained. An absolute professional. The stories themselves are excellently written. Yes, the stories are a bit dated being from the Victorian Era. That said, they are interesting and quite a few are rather disturbing. One story, that spoke of giant spiders, was well written and very well read and it creeped me out quite a bit. If you enjoy mysterious ghost stories and tales of unknown terrors, you’ll like this book a lot. The old language used will stimulate and feed your intelligence. This whole book is such a treat! They could not have found a better narrator if they’d tried.

Brandon McNulty is a good writer. His work deserves better production. The audio production is inconsistent. The first 4 chapters are well done. The author does a good job acting, it sounds like it was recorded in a sound booth with a condenser microphone. It’s great. Then starting in chapter 5 she literally sounds like she’s recording inside her car. At first, I thought she was acting a radio news broadcast, but that wasn’t the story. Granted, there was part of a scene that happened inside a car, but not in a way that would merit that sort of ambiance. When I got to chapter 8, I honestly considered that another narrator took over the reading because the style abruptly changed for the worse. The delivery was done in a news announcer fashion rather than voice acting. The script was being read, inside of a car, and not acted. I guarantee this is not the way she auditioned for this book. Her audition was certainly done like the first 4 chapters. If ACX used humans to review the submissions rather than AI, they would have caught the diminished quality. Since the volume levels and background noise were within ACX limits, the AI approved the reading. Unfortunately, the narrator has been paid so ACX won’t have this title redone. We’re stuck hearing this well written story delivered to us like a news broadcast coming from an AM radio at the bottom of a steel barrel. Because the writing and the story are so good, I still recommend this title. The narrator should be embarrassed and Brandon McNulty should be livid.

I’ve listened to this radio who on several different apps. ALL of them have muffled audio. This is vintage radio from the early 1970’s. I’d like to hear it more clearly, but I don’t expect great audio quality since this was an AM radio program. This is definitely fun to listen to, but you might need to adjust the EQ on your device.

I don’t know where they found this narrator, but I thought grave robbing was a crime. The information is very helpful to the average person and I highly recommend this book. The audiobook form is a challenge to listen to. I find my mind drifting off topic because the narration is so monotone. There’s no energy or inflection at all. He takes the term “dry read” literally. I recommend giving this a listen, but place the AED pads on yourself and keep the smelling salts nearby. Might want to listen with a paramedic friend so someone is there to intervene when you start to slip into a coma. I’m going to try lying in the back of an ambulance while I listen just in case. To be fair, the narrator speaks clearly and is easy to understand. So there’s that. As far as the info in the book. It’s definitely worth reading.

The Story of Electricity Audiolibro Por Dr. Jack Sanders arte de portada

Revisado: 07-23-23

This is a chronological overview of the discovery of electricity and the development of associated theories and laws. This is more aimed at the layman who is not a professional in the field of electricity. This does not have calculations or formulas beyond very brief mentions of the very basics and those are done in context of their historical discovery. The narration is pleasant and obviously done by a seasoned professional voiceover talent. The delivery is even and clear and is performed by a male American voice. Furthermore, to breakup the monotony of a tedious single voiced narration common to far too many audiobooks, this volume adds in character voices. There is a peppering of American, British, French, and Italian accented narrators occasionally mixed in to simulate the original people reading their own letters. It helps to transport the listener back in time and periodically set you in a time and place of history for a very short duration (these infrequent sections last mere seconds). This helps to breakup the monotone flow and refocus the mind back to the book. I find this helpful because I frequently listen while doing tasks that might; otherwise, cause the book to fade into the mental background. If you prefer to listen to audiobook monologues, you can simply buy any of the other thousands of audiobooks available on Audible as most are read by a single voice talent. That said, this is the only book I’ve found that covers this subject matter in this format. If you are hoping to help your school student to learn about the history of electricity, this production will make it interesting and memorable. I found it fun, educational, and well-worth the time. Can’t wait to share it with my daughter.

This is a well written classic performed by an exceptional acting talent, Tim Curry. While there is no music score or sound effects, they are not needed. Curry’s delivery is so excellent that I found myself alternately terrified, brought to tears, and grinning ear to ear; although, this story is not new to me! Few actors are of the caliber of Tim Curry. I highly recommend this version of the holiday classic.
