From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Implausible
Revisado: 05-02-21
Almost everything in this book is implausible. This book’s jump to nuclear weapons usage is a gross exaggeration. Even the premise of the cause of war is pure fantasy. Don’t waste your time.

Historia
This groundbreaking book provides the first systematic comparison of America's modern wars and why they were won or lost. John D. Caldwell uses the World War II victory as the historical benchmark for evaluating the success and failure of later conflicts. Unlike WWII, the Korean, Vietnam, and Iraqi wars were limited, but they required enormous national commitments, produced no lasting victories, and generated bitter political controversies.

Lost in the weeds
Revisado: 05-23-19
John makes a valiant attempt to relate war and battle details to Strategy. Unfortunately, the attempt results in some historical recollections that, in my opinion, are inaccurate. The following passage for example: “Deputy Chief of Mission George F. Kennan a year later, on February 22, 1946, sent a long cable from Moscow to the secretary of state outlining what came to be known as the “containment strategy.” I’ve read the Long Telegram and I highly recommend that everyone read it. I would not consider it an outline of the containment strategy. I would consider it a policy recommendation that was a precursor to the containment strategy.

Ike's Mystery Man brings a new dimension to our understanding of the inner-workings of the Eisenhower White House. It also shines a bright light on the indispensable contributions and sacrifices made by patriotic gay Americans. Historia
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

Concerned that I will be misinformed
Revisado: 11-06-18
From what I've read Romans were not the progeny of Romulus, rather Romulus built Rome on Palatine Hill, and, according to Anthony Everitt in The Rise of Rome, 3,000 Latins moved there. Later, to expand Rome's population, Romulus started offering Roman Citizenship to the people that moved to Rome. Professor Fukuyama's use of the term progeny implies too strongly that Romans were the offspring of Romulus. Later, Professor Fukuyama describes how Roman dictators were elected under conditions of extreme duress. The way this passage is worded, it sounds like the leaders of the Roman republic were elected dictators. Again, from what I've read, Roman dictators were appointed by elected co-consuls only in time of extreme emergency.
I have abandoned The Origins of Political Order.

Emerging as a market town from a cluster of hill villages in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C., Rome grew to become the ancient world's preeminent power. Everitt fashions the story of Rome's rise to glory into an erudite book filled with lasting lessons for our time. He chronicles the clash between patricians and plebeians that defined the politics of the Republic. He shows how Rome's shrewd strategy of offering citizenship to her defeated subjects was instrumental in expanding the reach of her burgeoning empire.
