Another tantalizing glimpse into Sigler's twisted mind

Matt Wallace contributes his talents to the Siglerverse in this entertaining novella about UFC cage fighting. I always love discovering more about Scott's world, but of the four existing novellas, this is my least favorite. If you're curious about the tech-mods of biological species, this is the book for you. That angle never particularly appealed to me, but I did find the explanation of the Kreterakian empire's thought processes fascinating.

This book is strange & wonderful, but I understand why Pat was leery of releasing it commercially. It's about as far from your traditional story architecture as it's possible to get. Rothfuss takes us on a journey into the mind of a slightly broken little girl. We live along with her for a period of seven days, but there's very little, if any conflict. Many folks will hate this book; I loved it. I'm mentally ill, and I was able to empathize with Ari more than I've been able to with any other fictional character. Ari's mind reminds me of the feelings Jenny Lawson inspires in me when she goes off on one of her tangents. If you're looking for the path less taken, this is it.

Jenny Lawson may have saved my life. She definitely turned it around. I'm a peculiar stripe of manic depressive, and her hilarious yet familiar stories let me know I wasn't alone. Since reading it, I've connected with others like me.

Her tribe may not be for you, but if you're mentally ill, read this book. It will make you laugh at minimum & there's likely a golden nugget waiting for your ears to dig it out.

The alien ambush. Paul created original aliens, and he hasn't given us many details yet.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, one of the flashback scenes. It was very personal; sorry I cannot share it.

Any additional comments?

The only bad thing about Derelict is the ending. You will want Tomb immediately.

An excellent addition to the GFL universe!

Where does The Reporter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Definitely near the top, but I would not recommend it to listeners who are not already familiar with the GFL universe. This novella flushes out the future Scott has built beautifully, but I doubt it would be very enjoyable for someone not familiar with all of the characters and intrigue of the world established in the core GFL novels.

What did you like best about this story?

It had a slightly different tone than other stories Scott has written in the GFL universe. I assume this is Mur Lafferty's influence on the novella, and it was refreshing to hear the GFL universe presented slightly differently than I was used to. It's still instantly recognizable, but subtly changed in an intangible way.

What about Scott Sigler’s performance did you like?

His performance of his own characters is always excellent. He brings them to life as no one else can.

Any additional comments?

If you're a fan of Scott's GFL novels, this is absolutely worth a credit.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes. This book reads like an early draft to me. Many characters, much of the dialog, and a few entire scenes feel half baked to me.

What could Scott Nicholson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The entire novel could have benefitted from at least one more draft between Scott & his editor. There were some *excellent* ideas & concepts in The Scarecrow which simply needed a bit more polishing to make them into a wonderful beginning to this trilogy. Unfortunately, the way Scott chose to present Book 1 of Solom, I will not be picking up Book 2 or 3, which is a shame. This series had a lot of potential.

What aspect of Teri Schnaubelt’s performance would you have changed?

Nothing. She did a remarkable job with the material she was given.

Do you think The Scarecrow: A Supernatural Thriller (Solom Book 1) needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, because there are definitely questions left unanswered at the end of The Scarecrow. Scott did do us the courtesy of ending Book 1 without a cliffhanger, which I certainly appreciate. You can certainly read this novel and be satisfied with a complete sub-story.

Any additional comments?

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

What made the experience of listening to Devouring Milo the most enjoyable?

Luke Smith's exemplary talents as a narrator.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The complexity of interactions & the relationships between the characters are what I found most interesting. The only thing that I can point to as possibly uninteresting is that the story is a little slow at the beginning.

What does Luke Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Luke Smith did a brilliant job bringing Tonia Brown's characters to life. His performance here added an extra level of enjoyment that I doubt I would have gotten if I'd merely read this story as text.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but I can't be specific without revealing spoilers.

Any additional comments?

Ms Brown is the first author I've seen who uses this particular plot twist in a text format. I've seen it in TV & film, but never in a book, so that was quite refreshing and caught me completely flat footed.

Both the ending Ms Brown chose and the book's brevity were disappointing to me. I kind of understand why she chose the conclusion she did, but I kept hoping it would take a different direction. I felt somewhat cheated at the end. This is one of those books that could have easily ended much more unconventionally. I would have appreciated Ms Brown delving further into the characters of Milo & the beast by extending the novel considerably.

Finally, I received this audiobook free in exchange for an honest review.

Doctor Who: Something Borrowed Audiolibro Por Richelle Mead arte de portada

Good story, poor narrator

Revisado: 07-09-15

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, the narrator, or at least how she chose to perform this audiobook.

How could the performance have been better?

Ms Aldred did an excellent job portraying The Doctor, but fell short with Perry and went completely over the top with The Rani. Her interpretation of The Rani's inflections made her character into a complete caricature. She became impossible to take seriously. I found it quite odd that Ms Aldred's male characters seemed to be done with more skill than her female ones.

Any additional comments?

Richelle Mead penned an excellent story here. It is a shame that Sophie Aldred's performance detracted from it. A narrator's job is to enhance the author's work for the listener, not create an obstacle to their enjoyment of the book.
