Started off slow, then blew me away.
Revisado: 06-07-22
For the first half of the book, I thought it was a typical teen novel. Then I realized why the author set it up the way they did. It gets real, I haven't teared up from a book in quite some time. I think some of the dialog could have been better written (especially in the flashbacks), but overall the experience was well worth it.

Yet in a place that doesn’t exist, a riddle, a puzzle, hope, fear, danger, salvation - all come together. Zach Marjek has faced death in the far corners of the Earth and survived where others have failed. Now, he's thrust into an unimaginable situation where mercenaries, an Inuit wanderer, a murderous Yupik, a young mother, a video game designer, a retired general, a president, a Chinese marine, and mathematics prodigies must come together.

Great mix of action, gov bureaucracy, and scifi
Revisado: 01-07-22
Reading some of the other reviews, clearly some thought this was going to be another destiny's crucible. It is not. This reads like a well informed modern science fiction novel with geopolitical elements, gov bureaucracy, and great character building. This is not a hero's journey novel (mostly), but it is all the better for it. The writing is good, and the plot is good. I read one review saying it is liberal propaganda about global warning (which I don't even recall being mentioned, and the author was literally SF in Vietnam...).... If your triggered about the littlest thing in a science fiction novel.. stay away I guess. If you like good writing.. read / listen to the book.

Please, please, stop saying the same monologue
Revisado: 09-07-20
Please, please, please stop saying the same dialog in 30 different ways. what should be a 5 hour book, turns into 10 hours because of the constant repeating of the same internal monologue in a slightly different way. Otherwise, would give 5 stars. It has been the case for the last few books. I assume because of the publisher pressure. I usually stop half way through the most recent books to allow myself to forget some bits, and then it is not so tedious when I pick up where i left off. Love the story/writing... hate the repetition.

Vampires = Jesus?
Revisado: 06-11-19
Very interesting take on Christianity and vampirism. I never made the connection of Jesus's redirection and how this could be connected to vampires. The book itself is worth the read which I read several years ago and was glad to see this book came out on audible. Good mix of action, interpretation of mythology, and the crusades themselves.

Good story, A LOT of propaganda.
Revisado: 04-29-19
Overall story is good if you can ignore the constant propaganda. I lean right on many of the same issues Nuttall clearly does but I think he sacrifices story for the sake of preaching. Entire parts of the book are dedicated to classroom lectures on the right way to think. Essentially, telling recruits they have been brain washed by propaganda, and then immediately educating them on their propaganda. Show em, don't tell em. I was hoping the 2nd book would have done a better job pushing the story along.

Space Afghanistan or Starwars?
Revisado: 10-13-18
Feels as if the two authors have VERY different styles. As OEF dude myself, I loved the first part. It felt like a space Afghanistan story with in depth character development and I truly loved and hated the characters I was supposed to in the story. The second part had a much larger story that I did not connect to the first story until a little bit into it. My type of Mil Sci fi goes w/ the first part of the book. Don't expect that type of story telling all the way through.

Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.
