I love the story, and Branagh's acting chops bring it to life well. It's a must own in my opinion.

The story is as always great, and the narration was thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended by me.

This book had points deep enough to draw tears from me, yet some that seemed almost, but not quite superficial. The depth won out, and the narrator made this a book I will listen to again. His voice, his pacing, his emotive ability really brought this book to life. Looking to see what else he's narrated.

I coupled this audio book with the word of promise complete audio bible, listening to each book of the bible before the chapter pertaining to it. (well after the first several chapters I did). the book was not what I expected, but it has been transforming. (going through the bible intentionally and honestly and grappling with questions it poses will always be transforming, but the book played an interesting part).

The author isn't so much digging into deep theology (per se) as he is having a frank and honest look at God and the difficulties we struggle with when grappling with who He (God) is. Done in a conversational format between himself and God, the voice of "God" took a few chapters to het used to, but from there on this book was a ministry tool God used to give me the freedom to question honestly, and as was true of the author, that honest questioning was relationship inspiring. I didn't agree with everything (though honestly I'd have to say I did with most), and I didn't like all that I agreed with. God as a character in the ultimate story the He Himself is telling, is a complex character. Larry drew that out very well. In the end, its just a book, but a book God used to grow me deeper in love with Him... despite the parts of Him I still find hard to take, but take Him I do, for He took me first, and I see the fingerprint of His love more places than I have before. I hope this review is helpful. may God bless you richly.

I didn't love the ghost/possession bit in a couple chapters. They made total sense with the story. I just really dislike that concept... and there are a few less than kid-friendly moments (not "adult" in the unfortunate modern sense, just beware of how your kid will take or be scared by certain creepy concepts. there are a few in there---and it's fairly intense in a few places).

But....

This was the perfect close to the series. All my petty grievances from the first two books (which were also great to read/listen to---though they they each had a few less than kid-friendly moment's as well) were wrapped up nice and tidyly. I was thoroughly satisfied with the end of the book. It made the whole series work. I look forward to sharing these books with others.

Bronson Pinchot... who remembers Balki Bartokomous? I feel a little bad for Bronson that Balki is the role he's most remembered for... but his character acting is on superb display in this audio book. I've always had a way with reading stories aloud that engage people, but it's as if through this book Bronson has thrown down a gauntlet to me and anyone else who thinks they're good narrators. Well, Mr. Pinchot, I accept and I love this reading. The books are great... truly... and the performance is the best I've ever heard (and I love audio books). I will forever remember Bronson (now) as the guy who threw the gauntlet and narrated The Heroes Guides ... ... and as Balki. what can I say, Balki was part of my childhood.

These books took stories from my childhood, turned them on their ears and, making me laugh out loud, made them somehow better... mostly.

I haven't adequate time to expound properly on this book. The first was better for younger audiences but leaves you having to read this one. The somewhat zombie-esque taleless took this book into (in my personal opinion) a tween or older book... when it had such promise from book one of being something I'd share with my daughter sooner rather than later. But now... Later it is. Don't misunderstand though. I loved this book. It brought tears to my eyes at just the right moments, and was adventure through and through. Well done Mrs. Burt.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. It is so deeply engrossing and read in such an engaging manner.

What did you like best about this story?

The seeming incompetent Hobbit, learning there is more to him than he is even aware. He feels he's just a nice respectable Baggins who should just sit around and smoke his pipe and stay quiet and do nothing dangerous. It's nearly allegorical of the state of modern manhood. We're supposed to be good respectable and do just what those in the Shire expect of us (i.e. what society expects of us). BUT... that often includes forgetting we have a side that was meant to be adventurous... that was meant to be able to take up the sword and protect those closest to us... That we have a wild side (not wild in the negative sense, but wildly willing to leap to the challenges we must face and overcome by sheer force of our wildness). That Bilbo starts as a passive---for lack of the proper term---pansy, and he grows to a strong and capable character, always bring me comfort and a feeling that we too can throw off the shackles of a pansy-fied manhood and be something more like unto a hero. And, all that while keeping a civilized air about us. We don't have to be the dwarves with their gruffness. We can be the hobbit who remains a gentleman throughout, yet has not lost the wild inside.

Which character – as performed by Rob Inglis – was your favorite?

Gandalf

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have... yes.

Any additional comments?

Worth the price any day of the week.
