Historia
In Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour.

Hell of a Book is charming, tragic, funny, horrifying, sad, relatable, unique. A surreal story, just like life.

Revisado: 09-03-22
I've admired Cassandra Peterson's work and the character of Elvira for a long time. I knew a little bit about her pre- Elvira career but I had no idea that she'd lead such an amazing life! It has been anything but hum-drum! If you're a fan of memoirs, I encourage you to check out this one.

I listened to this book myself once in it's entirety. Then, my spouse and I listened together, chapter by chapter, working the worksheets as we went. It really works! I highly recommend this to anyone who has outstanding debt that they would like to eliminate.

Poetic
Revisado: 05-31-20
Essentially, this book reads as a multi-part poem. Depending on your sensibility, this could be a positive or a negative. It's less of a how-to and more of a work of contemplative art. Whether you enjoy Stephen Levine's writing style, the book will for sure get you thinking about how you approach your life, how you define success, and your relationship to the concept of control.

A Gift
Revisado: 04-17-19
Melanie Brown and Louise Gannon have given the world a gift! This book is engaging, funny, horrifying, validating, and so very valuable. This isn't so much a tell-all in the way we typically think of one; it is an honest, real, illuminating tale about the unexpected paths we sometimes can wander down that cause us to lose our sense of self and how one woman, pushed to the brink of desperation, reclaimed her sense of self.

Historia
Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America - more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

Essential Reading
Revisado: 10-04-18
This book covers racist ideas, which the author categorizes into either segregationist or assimilationist in nature, as they arose in religious, scientific, political, popular media, and social discourse from before the founding of the United States of America into the 21st century. The author points out that even those who hold anti-racist ideas are not immune to holding racist ideas, as well. He highlights the intersectionality of racist ideas. The author places the spotlight on some significant figures throughout history and the evolution and influence of the ideas they expressed. In the end, Ibram X. Kendi makes the case for the rejection of racist ideas being in the self-interest of everyone but the very most powerful, regardless of race. This book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the condition of our society and about how power and privilege are distributed within it.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Strange and delightful
Revisado: 05-29-17
This is one of the strangest books and one of the best. The performances in this audiobook are wonderful. This story is perhaps not for everyone, a bit Inferno, a bit ghost story, a bit historical drama, at once morbid and oddly uplifting, humorous and sad. Like the human condition, it is full of contradiction.
