Historia
In 1959, America’s great indigenous art form, jazz, reached the height of its power and popularity. James Kaplan’s magnificent 3 Shades of Blue captures how that golden era came to be, and its pinnacle with the recording of Kind of Blue. It’s a book about music, and business, and race, and heroin, and the cities that gave jazz its home, and the Black geniuses behind its rise. It’s an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange environments where it can flourish most.

Great Art/Shameful Presentation
Revisado: 05-04-25
I love jazz, America’s only true art form. Excited to embark upon this journey I dug in only to be disenchanted as the history unfolded. This is the most blatantly racist (against white jazz artists) piece of work I’ve ever encountered. So much so that it made the personal effort almost impossible to endure. I’d read previously written works on all of these artists so there wasn’t a lot of new information in the details. It was the presentation accompanied by his personal bias that carried such negative connections for this reader, sadly.. I expected the sorrow of the addiction element but the racism threw me.

Well written darkness
Revisado: 02-20-25
This work though masterfully written was almost too dark for my tastes. Depression is not a place I like to visit but this work leaves me there on the cusp. Social and political upheaval are best visited from far,far away.

Historia
A master storyteller at his best - the O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story. Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, these stories comprise one of King's finest gifts to his constant fan. "I made them especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth."

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

honesty and forthright truths
Revisado: 02-12-24
I live in an army town and this book is heart wrenchingly true and bold. Kudos to the author for finally addressing a long ignored chunk of American history. Sadly our country is currently wrapped in similar mindsets so here’s hoping that such books as this and “the chemistry Lesson” will begin to show the public a view of women that has been ignored in the USA for decades. This is a great book!!! I couldn’t put it down!
