To start with...I am the demographic for this book. I grew up on the original trilogy and I read most the EU novels back in the day. From Thrawn to the Fate of the Jedi I was there. I've seen the good, the great, and the awful. This one is awful! I only finished it so I could write the review. Only Marc Thompson shined (as usual) and he at least got me to the end.

I have been through all of the new cannon books and really only one was good (Lords of the Sith), a few were average, and this one is plain bad. I wasn't expecting a story about the original leads since that would tip too much from the movie, but Wendig just doesn't get how to write for Star Wars. The language felt too much like a galaxy right hear instead of far far away. The "shocking" things he threw in were not all that shocking. The interludes were just strange and it felt like he was trying to do too many things. I didn't really get invested in any of the new cast and the teases about the regular crew felt unnatural.

For die hard fans like me of course we will buy and read everything that comes out. There was some crazy stuff in the NJO but at least it felt like the Star Wars Universe. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come!

You don't need to have played the game to enjoy the story but you might want to look up some of the characters on the star wars wiki for context.

I know Zahn isn't "canon" anymore but he still writes the best star wars stories of anyone (Lucas included) . I read the books years ago but the narration on this audio book is like being in a movie. JJ doesn't just have to live up to the movie but he has to live up to the test of the best of the EU stories and the Thrawn trilogy stands out among the pack.
