Historia
Lirael has never felt like a true daughter of the Clayr. Abandoned by her mother, ignorant of her father's identity, Lirael resembles no one else in her large extended family living in the Clayr's glacier. She doesn't even have the Sight, the ability to See into the present and possibly futures, that is the very birthright of the Clayr.

Fantastic adventure with Exquisite world building
Revisado: 04-10-18
A heroin who is believable, flawed yet admirable. For a man, Nix writes women very well. The secondary hero, a young man, is also well written. Nix captures the intricacies of emotion of early adulthood in uncertainty, fear and burdening responsibility. The world he builds is one you want to sink into, richly detailed, at times dark and beautiful, with steampunk type elements akin to the world of Myst. The objects in the story are described so richly one can almost sees them. The universe building is solid, thorough, and sings true in both it's sundry elements and creation story/magical system.
A unique hero journey that takes a different spin on fantasy than many other popular epics. He weaves a logical understanding of the universe into his magical system, as well as countless tenets of real life spiritual beliefs, creating a world in which chaos is evil, order is life, balance of the two is the ultimate hope, and everything eventually rests on free will.
Also plenty of creepy undead if you like that sort of thing.

Ok read if you are jonesing for a fantasy fix.
Revisado: 10-10-17
The writing is mediocre, the main character has a rather grating personality, and the story features an unfortunate and rather uncomfortable amount of spanking in it. The world building is not too bad though. I really liked the conceptualization of spellmaking as being akin to computer programming. A truly unique and satisfyingly logical approach to magic. If you really need some fantasy this will do in a pinch.

Great story, one narration problem.
Revisado: 07-08-17
The story is great of course, but the narrator gave Magnus a sort of NY/Jersey type accent and it REALLY throws me off.
As for the actual narrative, it's everything one could hope for from a first date between Alec and Magnus. The inherent kindness in Alec's protective nature, the implacable goodness beneath Magnus' facade of flippancy... And of course Claire's sarcastic humor throughout. Apart from Magnus' wierd voice, luckily only used when he deals aloud, David-Lloyd's narration is lovely, I love his light Welsh accent.

Tamors Pierce meets Las Vegas ;)
Revisado: 07-07-17
A rollicking mystery with a classically stubborn and intelligent Tammy heroine with the sharp writing of Pierce's later books and her masterful world building that creates a place somewhere between the early Renaissance and our own time.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

An illuminating and engrossing narrative.
Revisado: 03-31-17
This book, as promised, gave an excellent window into the lives of poor white Americans, but in trying to show why upwards mobility was so difficult for the group he came from, Vance also illuminated the social structures that allow the wealthy to retain power and wealth among this born into it.
