Not his best
Revisado: 01-06-23
Sanderson's habit of telling character development and jokes through exposition is really prominent in this book. The story was okay, but there seemed to be a drop in the quality of his prose with this book.

strange choice of narrators voice
Revisado: 12-16-21
I thought the different character voices the narrator used were fine, but the voice they used for the general narration was so over dramatic and frankly emo. It totally soured my ability to enjoy the book and set my expectations on the kind of story I would get. unfortunately the story was even worse than my expectations.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Sooo Sloooooww
Revisado: 11-24-20
Mistborn Final Empire (also written by Brandon Sanderson) is literally half as long but feels like it has twice as much story by the end. The Way of Kings didnt get exciting to me until like the last quarter of the book. I really think Sanderson could have done a better job pacing the story.

Historia
When reading and writing are the most important things in the world. Jevick, the pepper merchant's son, has been raised on stories of Olondria, a distant land where books are as common as they are rare in his home - but which his mother calls the Ghost Country. When his father dies and Jevick takes his place on the yearly selling trip to Olondria, Jevick's life is as close to perfect as he can imagine. Just as he revels in Olondria's Rabelaisian Feast of Birds, he is pulled drastically off course and becomes haunted by the ghost of an illiterate young girl.

the main character has almost 0 agency and almost never makes their own desicion. the book is 50% describing a place or thing, 40% random grim-style fairy tales, and 10% a plot.

In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of "transparency". Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens' thoughts and memories - all in the name of providing the safest society in history. When suspected dissident Diana Hunter dies in government custody, it marks the first time a citizen has been killed during an interrogation. The System doesn't make mistakes, but something isn't right about the circumstances surrounding Hunter's death.

Wild! Witty! Whimsical! What did I just read?
Revisado: 05-01-20
A wild ride that leaves you wondering why you took it. Prizes prose, wit, and motif over a plot with agency. Great detail and descriptions, but too often I didnt care about what was being described or felt things were happening less because of a characters effort, and more because its what the author wanted to have happen. Very much a story of things happening to people rather than people doing things.

Boring
Revisado: 02-19-20
It seems like the author prioritized aesthetic motif and great prose over having a moving plot and characters that the reader might want to get to know. The prose often came off as pretensions due to the lack of story and its sheer volume and focus dilutes the quality of any single paragraphs, often by repeating information the audience already knows from prior descriptions but in a slightly different manor. It felt like every subject of attention in the book had to be described five slightly different ways in quick succession before the author could move on.
