Rare perspective of African responders
Revisado: 08-03-24
This is one of the very few books on Ebola that go beyond the perspective of Western/Global North responders. So many go do Ebola for 3 weeks and write a book filled with limited perspective and no cultural, historical, economic perspective with themselves as the central character. But Preston captured the experience of African scientists and healthcare workers who do the bulk of the work and have the greatest risk with horrible pay and little recognition. I am so grateful he documented their experiences.

Love this book, narrator was disappointing
Revisado: 12-10-20
I have read this book many times over the years and it has provided support and guidance for me. I have also listened to Pema Chodron’s lectures so thought an audio book would be great to access. But I found the narrator’s style distracting. At times coy and at time’s flippant. I will go back to reading the book.

Historia
At the heart of Africa is Congo, a country the size of Western Europe, bordering nine other nations, that since 1996 has been wracked by a brutal and unstaunchable war in which millions have died. And yet, despite its epic proportions, it has received little sustained media attention. In this deeply reported book, Jason K. Stearns vividly tells the story of this misunderstood conflict through the experiences of those who engineered and perpetrated it.

Brilliantly and compassionately breaks down complexity
Revisado: 07-10-19
Stearns does not shy away from complexity, but provides context and linkages to aid us to better understanding of the Congo. For those who have little knowledge of the recent bloody history of this region, this is an excellent and comprehensive work. Dismantles the quick and easy explanations for the chaos.
