Historia
Written by a marine scientist (and winner of French eloquence competitions), this work of narrative nonfiction blends Bill François’ personal story with that of sea creatures to create an original and exciting work. In poetic prose, he describes his unlikely journey from being a Parisian child, afraid of the water and crippled by self-consciousness, to an eloquent and self-assured young man with a passion for the ocean and all who inhabit it.

Not as interesting uncompelling as I thought it would be.
Revisado: 06-25-22
This is more of a personal narrative and life experience bent than a truly scientific natural history, nonfiction book. As such I was disappointed. There’s a lot of literary embellishments and tangents that I don’t think really add to the book. In general I’m just not as interested in the authors fancies of interest or classroom experiences than I am in the facts about the animals and other life in the ocean. I’ve read lots better books, e.g. Lab Girl, that cover the science better while still being entertaining and personal.

Historia
Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.

A struggle without George Guidell but still worth it
Revisado: 08-11-21
Hard to listen to this book without George narrating. But still a solid Gabriel Alon book worth listening to. Not his best, but not the worst either.

Cosmos is one of the bestselling science books of all time. In clear-eyed prose, Sagan reveals a jewel-like blue world inhabited by a life form that is just beginning to discover its own identity and to venture into the vast ocean of space.

Science for a non-science people
Revisado: 08-06-17
While I applaud the intent to make science accessible a large audience, this is a bit simplistic at times. As such it isn't as informative or interesting as other science books I've read. E.g Lawrence Krauss. And it gets a bit preachy and repetitive about the failings of society and we should do to fix it.

Historia
Running into a long-ago friend sets memories from the 1970s in motion for August, transporting her to a time and a place where friendship was everything - until it wasn't. For August and her girls, sharing confidences as they ambled through neighborhood streets, Brooklyn was a place where they believed that they were beautiful, talented, brilliant - a part of a future that belonged to them.

Nothing stellar here
Revisado: 03-11-17
More of a linear ho hum retelling. Nothing surprising. Didn't leave me feeling inspired. Disappointed.
