Meh.
Revisado: 02-26-25
It started out so strong, and I thought it would be an interesting cautionary tale about the potential impact of AI. Can’t say more without spoilers, but like the description of the story, David Tennant is just a teaser. Figured it out hours before it ended.

When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen. Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.

Meh.
Revisado: 01-27-25
I feel like I’ve been on a long, loopy, highly improbable ride that was ultimately so average and UN memorable it’s hard to review. Meh. The narration took getting used to, it was like a read aloud by a school teacher.

7 Hours to Go.
Revisado: 12-15-24
Update: 2 hours to go. It does not get better. I cheated and googled the ending, and damn, I'd be really mad if I lost another two hours to this. I'm done.
Does it get better? Did the people who wrote all those glowing reviews read a different book? I'm slogging through this and realized I'm at the halfway point and not sure I can make it. There are zero memorable characters and way too much jumping around in voice and time and everybody's miserable. There's nobody to root for, they're all just sad. I've finally reached the point where we get the voice of the investigator, I'm hoping she'll pull this together, but my expectations are low.
Did you click on the PDF? WHY did anybody think that was a necessary inclusion?

Returned.
Revisado: 11-30-24
I tried starting this book twice, thinking the first time I just wasn't in the mood, my mind kept wandering and the narration grated. After all, it has thousands of glowing reviews, and the story synopsis sounded interesting, so I gave it a second chance.
There is no mood that would make this tedious slog with terrible narration worth my time or a credit. Thank God I was able to get my credit back. My new policy is to check out the critical reviews first, they're usually more accurate.

I blame Stephen King's blurb.
Revisado: 11-24-24
I absolutely, totally, completely loathe this book. It's a rambling pointless mess. It's not horror, it's not suspenseful, it has no likeable characters or even a real plot, and as others have commented, it could have been a short story. I'm assuming the publisher paid for those positive reviews that appear to be talking about an entirely different book. I bought it on a 2 for 1 sale because of Stephen King's blurb so I can't return it, and it's not a physical book so I can't even have the satisfaction of throwing it into the fireplace. If anything deserves to be incinerated, it's this godawful mess.

Worth the Wait!
Revisado: 08-04-24
When I finished Morgan is My Name, I couldn't wait for the next installment of the story. This did not disappoint me! It's a wonderfully fresh angle on the Arthurian legend, with well developed characters, and now I cannot wait for the third (and I think final?) part of the story.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

I'm not sure what to say.
Revisado: 07-31-24
I absolutely adored the first three books, they were so smart and with such wonderful characters, and you could tell that a historian wrote them. This one...not so much. (I admit I haven't read the 4th, nothing against Marcus and Phoebe, but it sounded like a side road I didn't get around to taking. )
Without explicit spoilers, and as others have said: it was weirdly like Diana Went to Hogwarts, if Hogwarts was all interchangeable witches and conversations in coffee shops, and a coven run like an HOA, complete with a rules-obsessed Karen. There are appearances by the fully developed characters from the earlier books, and that just makes the contrast with this crowd even more obvious. But unfortunately, Miriam doesn't stick around enough. And soooo many packing peanuts about tea, and seafood, and other things in lieu of character development.
And there were a couple of elements that added nothing to the plot, did nothing to move the story forward, and appeared to be inserted to make Diana and Matthew's relationship fit the standard "romance novel" mode. A thing about a potion and the woods comes to mind. I'll say no more, but what was the point? They went from a cohesive adult partnership of two very intelligent people navigating the politics of the Congregation to Dithering Diana all emotional and confused, and Matthew making breakfast and fetching firewood, and bickering. It's not Diana Goes to Hogwarts, it's Matthew and Diana are dumped in a Hallmark Channel movie. I don't know whether that was the author's chosen direction or something advised by the publisher, but the intelligent adult relationship they had, equal partners with different skiils and life experiences, was what made this series stand out from the gazillion vampire and witch books on the market. I hope that isn't lost forever.
I hope this isn't the direction the series is taking. I've recommended this series a lot and still think the first 3 books are original and amazing. I struggled to finish this one.

I found myself hate listening to this book. From the breathy, melodramatic narration to the irritating heroine to the improbable plot “twists” this was just not good.
