Historia
Set in a garden in Tehran in the early 1940s, where three families live under the tyranny of a paranoid patriarch, My Uncle Napoleon is a rich, comic and brilliantly on-target send-up of Iranian society. The novel is, at its core, a love story. But the young narrator's delicate and pure love for his cousin Layli is constantly jeopardized by an unforgettable cast of family members and the hilarious mayhem of their intrigues and machinations. It is also a social satire, a lampooning of the widespread Iranian belief that foreigners are responsible for events that occurs in Iran.

Amusing but a tad too slow at times
Revisado: 03-01-25
It is a story of crossed love and family drama which happens to be way different from what it might be expected.
The characters are weird but realistic and human, one of them, an impish libertine charmer is absolutely irresistible, and it is impossible not to grow fond of the old servant.

Historia

I didn't expect to love this book, but I did.
Revisado: 07-29-24
I think I saw a movie titled "Maurice" once and I remember a scene , possibly the closing one, from it.
The image from an old movie and an off hand remark about the author in "Tender is the night" made me select this title.
It was an interesting choice, totally baffling.
The protagonist journey to understand himself and his sexuality in the first years of the last century seem a wild subject for a book written then.
Still the times and the mindset of the people surrounding the author when he was writing and revising this book make it so fresh, spontaneous and enjoyable, more then a century after it was written and over fifty years after it was finally published.

Historia
Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, Tender Is the Night is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise. A profound study of the romantic concept of character - lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative.

I don't know if it was the way I listened to this book or the book itself, but the story felt disjointed.
It is as if thee different books have been put together because the two main characters appear in all of them.
In the first part there is a number of characters and episodes that die more or less literally there, and whose point at least for me was hard to see.
I found Dick deeply irritating in the last part of the book. Possibly one should feel pity for someone whose downfall is caused at least in part by two women, unfortunately I was unable too, hence the irritation.

Historia

Historia
Evgenii Onegin is best known in the West through Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. But the original narrative poem (consisting of 389 stanzas, the form of which has become known as the "Pushkin sonnet") is one of the landmarks of Russian literature. In the poem, the eponymous hero repudiates love, only to later experience the pain of rejection himself. Pushkin’s unique style proves timeless in its exploration of love, life, passion, jealousy, and the consequences of social convention.

As I mention the story is a simple one, but it is written in such a way that I could actually see the country side, the homes and the characters. It felt weirdly like watching a film.
I did not expect to enjoy this book as much, but then the classics are classics for a reason.

Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

The first part of this book is entertaining, even witty. The second part is not.
Revisado: 01-31-24
I enjoyed the first part of this book, the characters are nicely and dispassionately drawn and the descriptions are almost a critique of a way of life.
Unfortunately the story doesn't stop at "they lived happily ever after" and, in my opinion, loses its spark and becomes boring.
It is not a case that this is not one of the best known books of the author, and definitely not one she is famous for.

Maremma toscana, novembre ’43.
