Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Stellar in its scope and tragedy
Revisado: 10-22-23
I wish this book were required reading for all American students.
What a masterpiece of history- weaving the lives (spoiler alert) of Alexander Graham Bell, Joseph Lister, Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Chester Arthur into a true historical drama that reads like a novel.
Perfection by Candice Millard.
But all honor goes to perhaps the greatest presidential promise stolen from us.
But all will be edified reading of President James Abram Garfield- and perhaps inspired to alter their own lives for the better.

Historia
We think of cults as bizarre, inexplicable or otherworldly places that only strange people inhabit, but cults and other abusive and high-demand groups (and relationships) are actually quite commonplace. In fact, the behaviors, social pressures and authoritarian structures that create cults exist to a greater or lesser extent in every human relationship and every human group. In the first in-depth research of its kind, the author interviewed 65 people who were born in or grew up in 39 different cultic groups spanning more than a dozen countries.

Necessary reading
Revisado: 09-24-23
So necessary that I bought the hard copy, which is not inexpensive, to return to all the rich detail.
There is a lot of literature on cults now. This one is a clearinghouse, in a way, of all the important facts discovered in recent decades- not only in the body of the text but the Appendices and Bibliography.
For me, understanding those who were influenced without choice from birth is insightful into all cult dynamics.
The stories of survivors are heartwrenching but instructive.
All this said, the reader on audio was not the best match for the content. She also would've done better not to have tried acting out male and female voices in the victims testimonials.
She made a difficult topic sound even more alien than some feel the topic itself is. Eager to read the print copy.

When missionary Micah Wilder set his sights on bringing a Baptist congregation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had no idea that he was the one about to be changed. Yet when he finally came to know the God of the Bible, Micah had no choice but to surrender himself - no matter the consequences.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 06-05-21
Micah has articulated the Biblical gospel with a clarity one seldom hears today. The cause is the introduction of Biblical truth into a life trapped in a performance-based religious system. The way Micah has to work through the mire of self-accomplished salvation to faith in the cross of Christ alone will be helpful to anyone caught in a similar mindset, regardless of one's background.
It is not a book that confronts the specific issues of high-demand groups or Mormon doctrine or history directly. Micah's story--and the persecution he undergoes while coming to faith in Christ alone-- inherently delineates the difference between Biblical faith in Jesus versus the demands on followers within Mormonism.
Above all, Micah's conversion story is one of Jesus alone being exalted rather than great men and great deeds. It is a story about what happens to a Mormon missionary as He brings glory to the Biblical Jesus alone as Savior.

Content v Reading
Revisado: 05-27-21
This book is thought provoking & helpful. The author as a reader sounds earnest and kind. Usually I prefer authors to read. In this case, though, because of the reading mannerisms, I had to rewind often to re-listen. Some ends of words or phrases fall off either in articulation or volume. No worries, though. An amply rewarding listen.

Historia
Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was 23 and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age 38. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations.

Too soft for critics; too harsh for members
Revisado: 10-07-20
Am sure this will be a far too sympathetic view with repeated excuses for Smith's behavior for those outside the church. In examining the author's apparent attempt for fairness, one still has to wonder where the loyalties of an LDS academic rest. Are they with truth or promoting the church?
For members, some of the facts not normally divulged about Smith's life may surprise.
It will be left to the reader to decide where they stand. But it is hoped by this reader they will investigate many of the crucial problems in Smith's life only mentioned briefly in this treatise.

Revisado: 09-03-20
Michael Kramer gives an outstanding performance. But he may dramatize the content beyond what Chris Voss himself would have and that almost makes it less effective.
The content otherwise is so effective it's the only beef one can have with a 5-star coaching guide to life.

From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Stunning.
Revisado: 08-25-20
How refreshing to see a young man with great looks, intellect, and personality be driven purely by conscience, with little hope of reward, and at a massive personal cost.
What an example to follow.
Only Tyler himself could lend his own voice to this presentation- his shyness tells its own story.
What a stern warning of the power of charisma cementing our cognitive biases.
Would be a recommended listen were I an educator at any level in the hard or social sciences.
Bravo Tyler!
