Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Very interesting, especially in light of current events. The afterward is full of good advice that must have served as a “what not to do” for our federal (US) response to the coronavirus.

Historia
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby....

The mispronounced words were too much. He’s not the worst reader I’ve heard, but meh. It’s too bad, because I love this book.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

A classic with a great narrator
Revisado: 08-06-18
I listen to this book about every year. Some years it's a little more scary than others.
First the narration. Simon Preble is one of my favorite readers. I've read books I didn't have much interest in because he read them, and he makes them come alive. This one is no different. The characters are differentiated well, and the narration flows.
The story, of course, is well-known. It's a study of authoritarianism that can be chilling. It's an interesting comparison to Brave New World, where control is ceded to the government by am easily-diverted, disinterested population. Here, the government has clamped down on members of the Party, and part of the way the Party stays in power is constantly to re-write history. It's a societal gaslighting.

Narrator so bad it's unlistenable
Revisado: 02-15-15
What didn’t you like about Justine Eyre’s performance?
12 hours of vocal fry! Every single word is extremely gravelly for no reason, and a fake accent that sounds worse at the end of every sentence she drawls out!

Historia
Philip Norman turns his formidable talent to the Beatle for whom belonging to the world's most beloved pop group was never enough. Drawing on previously untapped sources, and with unprecedented access to all the major characters, here is the definitive portrait of John Lennon. This biography takes a fresh and penetrating look at Lennon's much-chronicled life, including the songs that have turned him, posthumously, into almost a secular saint.

Believe the reviews--horrible abridgment
Revisado: 08-09-13
Would you try another book from Philip Norman and/or Graeme Malcolm?
Sure. I think the entire book would have been great, or even a well-edited one. But this one makes you think you've zoned out and missed a big chunk or else had a technical malfunction. Graeme Malcolm is a good reader. Money: A Suicide Note was really great.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Guess.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from John Lennon?
Oh, God, please don't cut more.
Any additional comments?
I would like to hear this unabridged, but now I'm just cranky that I blew a credit on this book.

Action-y thriller
Revisado: 12-07-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Joe Barrett is a great reader, and this is a fun, slightly racy spy thriller. The violence is pretty brutal.
What other book might you compare The Loo Sanction to and why?
The Eiger Sanction, also good.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, but it would be a spoiler to say what.

Eh--lots of hype
Revisado: 12-08-11
Is there anything you would change about this book?
People seem to love this book, and the story is ok, but it's not particularly well-written. I found that distracting.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story is good.
Would you be willing to try another one of Wil Wheaton’s performances?
Nope. Too many mispronunciations.
Do you think Ready Player One needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No opinion.

This powerful and breathtaking novel is the story of four cadets who have become bloodbrothers. The passion. The rage. The friendship. The loyalty. The betrayal. Together, they will brace themselves for the brutal transition to manhood... and one will not survive.

Mispronunciation diverts from the story

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dan John Miller?
I thought he was a pretty good reader, but his mispronunciations were distracting. Fete, effete, papist, archtype are a few.
