Historia
In a Stockholm city park, police discover the hideously abused body of a young boy. Detective Superintendent Jeanette Kihlberg heads the investigation, battling an apathetic prosecutor and a bureaucratic police force unwilling to devote resources to solving the murder of a nameless immigrant child. But with the discovery of two more mutilated children's corpses, it becomes clear that a serial killer is at large.

I couldn't stand it.
Revisado: 01-22-25
It is a horrible story about the sexual torture and murder of children. It describes how you can create a serial murderer by tormenting a child. No doubt the story is well told and plausible. I couldn't spend any more time in that world.

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

An Excellent Synthesis
Revisado: 01-21-25
This is a brilliant synthesis of the scattered and partial evidence we have for the Vikings in the early middle ages. Price uses archeological research, including the relatively new scientific assays, together with the literary record of the sagas and rare accounts from outsiders like ibn Fadhlan to paint a detailed picture of the life and beliefs of a mostly pre-literate people. It is an astounding achievement, told with dramatic pacing, and at the end closing on the beginning like the Midgard serpent on its tail.

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Believable characters who live in a world utterly mundane and yet also inhabit a secret space of danger, suspicion, distrust and treachery. The reader is the best I've heard, bringing each character's voice out distinctly and persuasively.

a very interesting memoir, especially of Stewart's early life and experiences in the theater. I especially enjoyed his stories about meeting and working with other actors, in all media. I could have done without some of the closeups of his romantic life. He could have presented his real flaws as a human being without going into detail.
But nothing on his rescue work with pit bulls?!? The story of Crabbe was brilliantly and empathically told. I wanted to hear about what drew him to pit bull rescue, and what his dogs have meant to him.

Historia
Two months after D-Day, the Allies found themselves in a stalemate in Normandy, having suffered enormous casualties attempting to push through hedgerow country. Troops were spent, and American tankers, lacking the tactics and leadership to deal with the terrain, were losing their spirit. General George Patton and the other top US commanders needed an officer who knew how to break the impasse and roll over the Germans - they needed one man with the grit and the vision to take the war all the way to the Rhine. Patton and his peers selected Maurice Rose.

Should have been a great story
Revisado: 05-28-23
The author is very biased against some generals, e.g. Bradley. every time Bradley comes up, he slams him again for "not being able to read a map." A professional historian should try to give the fairest possible reading to the evidence and the individuals, reserving his judgment for the conclusion. Bolger's contempt and sarcasm for some is displayed repeatedly, which is a bore and provides no insight. He also indulges in sarcastic side comments too frequently. "The only Jews in [German town] that day were wearing olive drab." This does not contribute to the reader's knowledge.
Someone should keep a running tally of how often Bolger repeats, " Send a bullet, not a man. "
He is equally biased in favor of some, e.g. Gens. Rose and Collins. For a book focused on Rose, we learn little about him. He was quiet, taciturn, a professional's professional. He was also always right, according to Bolger. I can recall only one exception.
Maybe Rose's personality was a tough nut to crack. But Bolger doesn't show the reader the daily work of a division commander and his headquarters, save that it's important to lead from the front. Over and over we hear how Rose drove to the front, never do we learn what exactly he learned and how he used the information. Nor do we learn anything about the administrative skill required to keep a division fit for purpose and functioning in the front line.
It's too bad. It should have been a great story.

Historia
A classic of WWII, this is the vivid memoir of Private Bowlby, who came through the North Africa campaign only to have to battle in bitter fighting against a stubborn and skilled German defence in Italy. It is a truly authentic account of what it was like to fight your way through one of the most gruelling and dangerous campaigns of the Second World War, where so often the hunters became the hunted.

Heartfelt, crushing
Revisado: 05-10-23
The story of an ordinary soldier in the Italian campaign in WW2. He describes unabashedly his feelings about his experiences and his comrades. He shows how ordinary men, most with fewer advantages of class and education, kept their spirits up, supported one another at need, and demonstrated true compassion.
The narrator does very well with accents and dramatization.

Historia
E. J. Jernigan's memoir offers listeners a fascinating glimpse of life as an enlisted man aboard the USS Saufley, one of the most highly decorated destroyers of World War II. It is a rarely told story of the sailors who fought the war from boiler rooms, after-steering spaces, radio shacks, and other gritty places that keep a warship going. For the author, it was a world of strong emotions and quick reactions, where men had to adapt and grow if they were to survive.

Interesting story, less than weii told
Revisado: 05-01-23
Jernigan had quite a career in the Navy and saw a lot of combat. Unfortunately he is not a very good writer, and spills out stories and amusing anecdotes higgledy-piggeldy, moving on to unrelated subjects without acknowledgement or transition. He also tells little of his combat experience until almost the end of the story, when they fought off kamikaze attacks.
The narrator reads flatly and mispronounces naval terms such as "boat-swain" (bosun) and "kway" (quay.) Could have been easily avoided.

Historia
During the Second World War, Flt Lt Richard Stevens led an extraordinary campaign as an RAF nightfighter. Known to contemporaries as "Cat's Eyes" and by the height of his success in July 1941 as the "Lone Wolf", Flt Lt Stevens was the RAF's highest scoring nightfighter pilot with 14 victories. What makes his story unique is that all this was achieved without the aid of radar or another crew member. Instead, Flt Lt Stevens used extraordinary skill, instinct, and innate marksmanship.

A troubled Life
Revisado: 05-01-23
Rather dry telling, with all the operational details, of an interesting man's largely unhappy life. the personsl story is somewhat inscrutable, with conflicting accounts of him from famile vs. colleagues. Stevens may himself have deliberately obscured his inner life. The only perceptive and emotional account is given by the war artist Eric Kennington, in a letter to Stephens' father after his son's death. It is then subjected tp pointless and impossible speculation concerning their relationship. Impossible to tell with so little knowledge.

Historia
Alistair Urquhart was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders captured by the Japanese in Singapore. He not only survived working on the notorious Bridge on the River Kwai , but he was subsequently taken on one of the Japanese ‘hellships’ which was torpedoed. Nearly everyone else on board died and Urquhart spent 5 days alone on a raft in the South China Sea before being rescued by a whaling ship. He was taken to Japan and then forced to work in a mine near Nagasaki.
