Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Killer Story, Odd Narration
Revisado: 05-05-20
I love Cornwell’s Sharpe novels, even if they’re the literary equivalent of a John Wick movie. This one is excellent.
The narrator made some... odd choices, however. Still, a solid listen.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Hasn't Aged Well / Questionable Narration Decision
Revisado: 04-09-20
I first read Dune about 25 years ago. I loved it then. My re-read/listen, didn't yield the same enjoyment. The narration feels clunky, the POV constantly changes and not much seems to happen.
What's worse is that the producers of this version chose to utilize different narrators for different chapters. So characters who have a certain voice through the first part of the story change, and change again. It's jarring and creates an uneven experience.
Between the disappointing text and bumpy narration, I punched out halfway through.

In 1356, Cornwell resurrects this dramatic and bloody struggle - one that would turn out to be the most decisive and improbable victory of the Hundred Years' War, a clash where the underdog English not only the captured the strategic site of Poitiers, but the French King John II as well.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Historia
Thomas De Quincey, infamous for his memoir "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater", is the major suspect in a series of ferocious mass murders identical to ones that terrorized London 43 years earlier. The blueprint for the killings seems to be De Quincey's essay "On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts". Desperate to clear his name but crippled by opium addiction, De Quincey is aided by his devoted daughter, Emily, and a pair of determined Scotland Yard detectives.

Well Told, If Not a Bit Contrived
Revisado: 05-23-17
The story is well researched, detailed and is paced at a rate that keeps you involved. The minuses, for me, are blocks of exposition-laden dialogue that sounds forced and unnatural, and a scene where the De Quincy character--a 69year old opium addict--manages to survive an attempt on his life. The latter threw me right out of the story and seemed wholly unbelievable. Anyway, on the whole, I did like the characters and plot, and loved the setting and ambiance. I'd recommend it, just be a bit forgiving.

Slow Beginning, Tremendous Ending
Revisado: 05-12-17
The first quarter or so of the story is a bit slow, but the story speeds up tremendously with the introduction of FBI Special Agent Tom White. It also has a heartbreaking ending. An excellent--and terrible--story that deserves to be told.

In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines-- anticipating the detective's next adventure-- only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning -- crowds sported black armbands in grief -- and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-26-17
After seeing the Imitation Game and reading the Last Days of Night, I really, really wanted to love this Graham Moore story, but simply couldn't. Overwritten in parts with an ending that is simply preposterous (the actions of the characters in the modern day portion of the story becomes wholly unbelievable in the final chapter), I found myself finishing the story only because I was halfway there and figured, "why not?" Moore is a very talented writer, I just didn't care for this work.
