Tries to have a pity party for The tragically beautiful
Revisado: 05-01-25
Like others before, Sarah Maas tries to invoke in the reader a sense of connection and pity for these beautiful, perfect, flawless, innocent poor tragic characters to whom at no fault of their own the world has just happened. take for example the beautiful, powerful, perfect angel who is virtually indestructible, but falls into slavery at no fault of his own. tragic. cry me a river for the beautiful ones. oh and by the way, they're all immortal. sorry. not for me.

The Gods are dead. The Magelord Salazar and his magically enhanced troops, the Augmentors, crush any dissent they find in the minds of the populace. On the other side of the Broken Sea, the White Lady plots the liberation of Dorminia, with her spymistresses, the Pale Women. Demons and abominations plague the Highlands. The world is desperately in need of heroes. But what they get instead are a ragtag band of old warriors, a crippled Halfmage, two orphans and an oddly capable manservant: the Grim Company.

Great grimdark fantasy
Revisado: 07-07-24
Among the best, most engaging grimdark fantasy I've read. Similar to First Law series by Joe Abercrombie. I hope there's more to come!

Intriguing story and memorable eccentric characters
Revisado: 07-04-24
I enjoyed the story. Difficult to predict what was going to happen. Characters were all very interesting. The villains were truly quite despicable. The protagonists were quite different and novel in their features.

schizophrenic story
Revisado: 05-04-24
the main character jarringly flip-flops btw unstoppable superpower to weak as a kitten in a heartbeat. uneven story telling. complex world inadequately revealed to the listener. but, I listened to the very end of the >60 hour story, so it wasn't so bad.

Was this really the first book in the series?
Revisado: 01-28-24
I thought I was listening to the novels out of order. very little explanation, just whiz-bang mystical powers that can have ever so convenient abilities and limitations. kinda like a star trek episode where you have some conflict and some convenient technology appears in the knick of time to save the crew. further, the voice actor is like listening to a know-it-all tween explaining a story. I'm not wasting any more time on this series.

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Enthralled, can't wait for the next installment!
Revisado: 12-03-23
Imagine the best parts of Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games and a dash of Dune, smash them all together with a lot more intelligence and you have the Red Rising Saga. Fully developed characters who feel real but experience extraordinary lives. Battles described with text that makes you keep 'turning the page' and can't set it down. This is the first book series I've read twice. I hope it doesn't take four years for the next book to come out.
I have to admit I grew to like the different voice actors for the different narrators that were utilized in the first two audiobooks of this series. Tim Gerald Reynolds does a great job but I hope they return to the previous format.

Fascinating story with classic characters
Revisado: 11-12-23
I remember watching the early 1980s TVB Hong Kong series as a child, never really having read the novel. The series was incredible. Hearing the translation in English gives such a different vibe, but I will admit, the translation is actually quite outstanding and carries the story very well. The characters in this story are so vibrant and memorable. The story itself is quite exciting, set against a very epic background. The narrator did a nice job trying express their characters and personality.

you have to work for it . . . .
Revisado: 07-04-23
this is among the few books I sped up to hurry up to get it over with. the ending is strong and almost makes me want to listen to the other books in the series but it was a heck of a lot of time to get to anything exciting in this book even with playback sped up.
I find the narrator's voice to be foppish and effeminate.
I'm torn to give the next book in the series a chance or not.
