Historia
Not many Brits move to Poland to work in a fish and chip shop. Fewer still come back wanting to be a Member of the European Parliament. In 2016, Ben Aitken moved to Poland while he still could. It wasn’t love that took him but curiosity: he wanted to know what the Poles in the UK had left behind. He flew to a place he’d never heard of and then accepted a job in a chip shop on the minimum wage. When he wasn’t peeling potatoes he was on the road scratching the country’s surface.

Great narration, okay story
Revisado: 02-26-24
I would listen to Will M. Watt narrate the dictionary, so of course this was overall an enjoyable listen. That being said, I wasn’t that impressed with the story itself. The first chapter or two read heavily like Bill Bryson, which isn’t surprising given that the author spent time traveling with him. But Ben Aitken is not Bill Bryson. The attempts at wit didn’t always land and were not funny enough to justify the snark. There were moments of true insight, but often it read as trying too hard to be profound. The author supposedly quoted passages of text and poetry during his conversations and excessive number of times - dare I say an unbelievable amount. Some parts about Poland, its culture, history, and people were truly interesting. The book would have benefited from more of that and less of the author getting drunk and being hungover. This was an interesting premise for a book, but the execution left me wanting.

Historia
After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks, and tower dwelling improvements on the car dependence of sprawl?

A must listen for urban planners
Revisado: 03-01-23
A great collection of examples of both good planning and bad planning, with solutions for the latter. I appreciate that the author addressed racial and class inequality and the role that zoning plays in both. I wish I had listened to this prior to starting my Master of Urban Planning program, as it is a great primer to nearly all of the concepts that we discuss in planning school.
Overall I enjoyed the narration, but I didn’t love the choice to give speakers accents based on their country of origin.

Historia
Suddenly finding herself 40 and single, Lori Gottlieb said the unthinkable in her March 2008 article in The Atlantic: Maybe she, and single women everywhere, needed to stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming and instead go for Mr. Good Enough. Looking at her friends' happy marriages to good enough guys who happen to be excellent husbands and fathers, Gottlieb declared it time to reevaluate what we really need in a partner. By looking at everything from culture to biology, in Marry Him, Gottlieb frankly explores the dilemma that so many women today seem to face.

Nothing Revolutionary
Revisado: 02-19-23
While there are some good messages in the book about prioritizing what really matters in a relationship, such as shared values and wanting the same things as your partner, these are not revolutionary and are lessons that most people learn before their 20s are over (at least I did). I was relieved to see that the title is misleading - the book is largely about compromise and not settling (a large reason I read the book was out of curiosity about the title). Beyond the few good messages, this book reads largely like a compilation of case studies on overly superficial women and places unfair blame on women for being too picky, while praising men for their clarity of mind to settle for partners who are good enough. Oh, and apparently all men want to have children and thus will not date a woman who is not of child bearing age, as that is really all women have to offer. The narration was well done, but the book itself is a disappointment.

Historia
Thirty years after its publication, The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning....[It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments."

A Planner’s Guidebook
Revisado: 01-10-23
While I enjoyed much of the subject matter, I found the narration to be quite dull. Regardless, a must-read / must-listen for urban planners.

Cute story but didn’t like the narration
Revisado: 01-01-23
This was a typical Talia Hibbert romance, which I always enjoy. Perhaps a bit cheesier than some of her others, but overall enjoyable. I just couldn’t get into the narration. Everything was weirdly high pitched and whiny.
