Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

More interesting and thought- provoking than Children of Time. Interesting interplay of human, artificial, 'derivative' and alien intelligence in one package.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

intriguing plot, told at just slow enough a pace that you wish it was faster, until you reach the end and wish there had been another chapter. Great narration.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Very good story, sloppily told. The narrator mangles virtually every Japanese name in the book - something of an insult to some of O'Doul's most ardent fans and O'Doul himself. However, no apparent bias here as the names of a couple of Hispanic players are also tortured, as are a few words of the English language. Too many unforced errors?

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Powerful because it's true. something everybody should hear. My only small criticism is the sound editing - some of the early taped conversations are too quiet to hear - could be cleaned up a bit.

Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

an interesting biography married by one of the worst narrations I've heard in many years as an Audible subscriber. I'm not even sure that this was voicemail by a human, as many chapters sounded more like a Norwegian version of Stephen Hawking's mechanical voice than a true voice. Too bad.

Historia
In modern history, the story of capitalism has been a story of firms and financiers. That's all going to change thanks to the Big Data revolution. As Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, best-selling author of Big Data, and Thomas Ramge, who writes for The Economist, show, data is replacing money as the driver of market behavior. Big finance and big companies will be replaced by small groups and individual actors who make markets instead of making things: think Uber instead of Ford, or Airbnb instead of Hyatt. Will this be an age of prosperity or of calamity?

What a load of...
Revisado: 03-22-18
Really looked forward to this book based on title and reviews - forced myself to the end in hope that I might find something insightful. Big Reveal: Data often helps us to make better decisions. beyond that, techno utopian claptrap that is ignorant of history and human behavior, and conflates price with judgement, and markets as the place where we will all self-actualize in data risk collaboration, just as long as we ensure diversity in our AI. My head hurts. It's like Paul Coehlo and Mark Zuckerberg had a love child. Take two aspirin before reading.
