Glad I didn't pay for this book
Revisado: 10-22-22
Like so many other reviewers before me, I was not crazy about the sexual content of this book! If I only had a dollar for every time she talks about "s***ing d***" I would be a rich woman! I am glad that I stuck with the book, however, because the ending was somewhat worth waiting for and the totally reprehensible character of the title character was explained.

Historia
This is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep. When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires.

Not one of the better Mary Russell stories
Revisado: 11-11-21
I have read every one of the books in the Mary Russell series but have become disappointed in the recent offerings and this one is no different.
I found the story uninteresting and the resolution somewhat disturbing. Sadly I am beginning to find Mary a bit unlikeable. This might be due to the narrator.
I have approached the last few books with less excitement because they are starting to feel stale. I have the same feeling for Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series.
As a student of European Royalty it was fun to see the inclusion of Marie and Ileana of Romania!
Hopefully the next book in the series will be more satisfying!

Sweet but predictable

This cozy mystery is a pleasant diversion but, alas, I suspected the culprit almost immediately!

Narration is tough
Revisado: 04-02-13
What did you love best about The Malice of Fortune?
I came to care about the characters and the underlying mystery once my ear adjusted to the accents!
What other book might you compare The Malice of Fortune to and why?
Can't think of any I would compare it with-maybe The Name of the Rose?
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Although the idea of using Italian readers to provide atmosphere is laudable, the accents (especially of the female reader) were so thick that it took some time to adjust. The male reader used some really odd voices to differentiate characters-DaVinci was particularly odd and funny.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Don't know
Any additional comments?
The story itself is quite interesting and the atmosphere of Renaissance Italy is exciting once you get past the accents.
