It’s like eating at a familiar chain restaurant: nothing on the menu will knock your socks off, but you know what you’re gonna get. The food quality is dependable and satisfying.

If you’re a Grisham fan, this story is plenty entertaining throughout. The “climax” is relatively flat, yet still satisfying.

The performance by Beck was excellent.

All in all not Grisham’s best novel, but plenty good enough to entertain me as I drive for for work.

If you’re a fan of Grisham’s narrative style, this book won’t disappoint. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.

How many other ways can I say it? :)

If you like a little bit of sleuthing mixed in with a well-built sci-fi infantry action, with shades of Apocalypse Now, you’ll love this story.

It’s relatively short, but the voice acting and writing make the ride worthwhile.

The ending is satisfying and makes all the clues snap neatly into place when you finally see the big picture.

It’s longer, deeper and the narrator knows how to read the English language unlike the job Brian Kilmeade did here.

As other reviews say, the narration alone kills this book. His tempo is fast with misplaced or imagined, commas where none, need exist.

He also leans heavily on the phrase “none other than...” The first time I heard this phrase it was “none other than George Washington.”

Later it was “none other than” a local school headmaster and other types of common people that there are others of.

Finally - the content itself is basically a shell or outline (perhaps Cliffs Notes) of “Washington ‘s Spies,” which contains much more info.

I'll admit I'm now invested in the story to the point I want to find out what happens to the characters.

But...a couple of notes first:

1) This second installment (Rath's Gambit) seemed much shorter than the first. I haven't compared the runtimes, so if they are similar it may be due to the plot being faster paced. Compared to the first book, which spanned over a decade, this one runs its course in weeks of plot time, so the action is more compressed.

Either way, it felt as if the story was cut in the middle, leaving me a bit surprised and disappointed.

2) Some of the plot points / events in the timeline seem disjointed, as if they should have occurred before reading other chapters...perhaps it's a plot device by the author, but in some instances it's not entirely clear why it's used. For example, in some cases it takes one character weeks to travel from one planet to the next, where others seem to make the journey extremely quickly.

One other thing that bugs me - and since this is sci-fi maybe it shouldn't, but the instant, flawless communication and interplanetary transmission of video and audio signals, even in remote places with seemingly no infrastructure or way to beam such a signal, sorta bugs me.

But it's Piers Platt's world and I'm just living in it.

Those grumbles aside, the story remains compelling. I'm buying the third book because I want to find out what happens to Rath and others.

No spoilers here.

The science fiction here is interesting enough that I found myself trying to brainstorm ways to solve some of Rath's more interesting predicaments.

I find his conflict between morality and self-preservation to be compelling enough that I bought the second book in the series, but so far, Rath as a character is not particularly likeable if only because he's only interested in self-preservation. To be fair, he's shown flashes of concern for others, but circumstances simply haven't allowed things to develop further for him. He's a very flawed character and for that alone I am interested to see how his story develops over the series.
