I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

I don't get the hype.
Revisado: 05-03-24
I stuck it out with book but I couldn't wait for it to be over. 2nd try with this author and I was even less impressed than I was the first time. Unlikeable characters - all of them - no pathos; predictably contrived plot; anticlimactic.

Born in West Africa in the mid-eighteenth century, Maryam Prescilla Grace—a.k.a “Momma Grace” will live a long, wondrous life marked by hardship, oppression, opportunity, and love. Though she will be “gifted” various names, her birth name is known to her alone. Over the course of 100-plus years, she survives capture, enslavement by several property owners, the Atlantic crossing when she is only eleven years of age, and a brief stint as a pirate’s ward, acting as both a spy and a translator.

Reluctant as I was initially, I loved this story. Robin Miles narrates it perfectly as is usual for her.

A lot of sex.
Revisado: 12-08-23
I mostly enjoy these Kylie Brant stories, though they lean towards more erotica than crime or mystery. This one I found a bit heavy handed and padded.

Historia
All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

Robin Miles is a master narrator. The way she brings this story to life is phenomenal. All the accents she pulls off is incredibly impressive. I could not have enjoyed this more.

Holly remains a delight.
Revisado: 09-08-23
This was my first audio experience involving Holly (read the previous stories where Holly appeared via physical books) so the narrator was fine to me. I liked the story overall. I personally interacted very little with other people during the heights of the pandemic and lockdown so I can't judge if all the vax/mask talk and elbow bumping rings true. It did seem a little much at a point. Interesting villains though. Twisted. Holly is still a great character and I appreciate her ongoing evolution.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Excellent podcast!
Revisado: 11-22-22
Scott and Matt are awesome. I'm not that into podcasts in general, but this came up as a recommendation after I listened to one of TDT titles for the umpteenth time. I return to the series from time to time just to hang out with the Ka-tet. This podcast was a delightful discovery and I binged the 1st season. Listening to them deconstruct and discuss TDT was so much fun and more than a little enlightening. They illuminate aspects I'd never picked up before on during my many, many trips to the Tower and I now see it in new ways. Give these guys a listen. They're smart, insightful and funny. Scott's love for the series mirror my own and I love experiencing it vicariously through Matt who's on his first trip. I've got a long way to go to catch up to them in real time but these back episodes proved to be real gems.

Sleep inducing
Revisado: 10-28-22
I suppose someone might call this a "slow burn". I say it dragged. King likes exhaustive character development, I know but this (main) character's life story just wasn't that interesting to me. Read in David Morse's low, slow voice, it was down right boring. I kept thinking, something interesting is going to happen soon but the climax was delayed and delayed some more. And then the payoff was depressing.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 09-16-22
I was surprised to see the print version was only 608 pages (while that may be a lot for most authors, it isn't for King). I thought for sure it must be one of those cinderblocks he writes, which is to say this felt like a super long listen. To me, it was indulgently long and a few times my mind wandered (which of course dragged it out even more because I'd have to rewind it.) Still, I never lost interest in the story, the meat of which took quite a while to get going. There were themes from classic fairy tales (loose ones) and echoes from his own Dark Tower Series. Charlie, in fact, struck me as an older version of Jake Chambers. Maybe it was his beloved pet or it was his time and adventures in a parallel world filled with strange and often terrible things. He's the only "gunslinger" in this story though, which is weird and imaginative in that Stephen King sort of way. I enjoyed it overall and the narrator was excellent.

This had promise and started out okay but ultimately the story and protagonist underwhelmed, even annoyed me. I didn't like the narration either but that may have been more the fault of the writing itself. This one disappointed me.
