The Early Middle Ages-the years from A.D. 650 to 1000-were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."

Interesting subject and informative--- but I simply could NOT get past the frequent use of "a-a-and..." when the narrator changed topics or even was merely completing a thought.

A solid supernatural thriller that does not seek to appease the woke "hall monitors". I mean it's a story simply meant to entertain, not check any intersectional boxes. That is reason enough to like it.

Any thoughtful person will find much to consider in this book. Guardrails that have kept our country functioning (and often prospering) are attacked by myopic thugs, while sane people have allowed themselves to be cowed into silence. Knowles explains how and why- and what is at stake for all of us.

Redundant and unhelpful

It makes its one valuable point ("stay active and involved") very early on-- then repeats it over and over. One would expect the author to know her material well enough to make it interesting, but whatever the author's other skills, she's not a natural reader.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

For 3,000 years, mankind has grappled with fundamental questions about life. What is real? Who or what is God? When is it legitimate for one person to have power over others? What is justice? Beauty? This 84-lecture, 12-professor tour of Western philosophical tradition covers more than 60 of history's greatest minds and brings you a comprehensive survey of the history of Western philosophy from its origins in classical Greece to the present.

Comprehensive, interesting, and accessible
Revisado: 03-04-19
There are more lecturers than are given credit in the description. With so many, you'll probably find some with a presentation style you like more (or less) than others. I can get beyond that, but it may be an issue for some.
What I found more off-putting was one of them (initials are P.C., Phillip Something-or-other) discussing the minutia of christian dogma as if he were presenting historical fact. His segments felt more like sermons in church, rather than academic lectures.
Still, this was one speaker out of many, and the rest were able to present the history of ideas and the minds who developed them in their historical context. All in all, this has been a credit well-spent.

Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

Historia
The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the most widely read pieces of literature written in the 20th century. But as Professor Michael Drout illuminates in this engaging course of lectures, Tolkien's writings are built upon a centuries-old literary tradition that developed in Europe and is quite uniquely Western in its outlook and style. Drout explores how that tradition still resonates with us to this day, even if many Modernist critics would argue otherwise. He begins the course with the allegory of a tower....

Revisado: 02-08-19
Having read The Hobbit and the trilogy many times over many years, I found this to be a fascinating look at Tolkien himself and what is going on "behind the scenes" of his books. This book increased my appreciation of his skill and the depth of Tolkien's knowledge of older story-telling traditions and how he incorporated subtle little details into LOTR. As Prof. Drout points out these techniques and details, they become apparent to the listener and help to explain why the story resonates as it does.
The next time I read LOTR, I'll remember and notice what Prof. Drout was talking about and appreciate the story even more.

Page-A-Day Aphorisms
Revisado: 02-08-19
Audible has at least two other offerings in the Great Courses series that cover mindfulness and meditation much better than this. If you have some background already, this is the equivalent of one of those Page-A-Day calendars that have a quick thought or fact for you to review. If you do not have a background, you will not learn anything new here; no how-to's or tips. It will come across as a few dozen fortune cookie sayings-- and I began to recognize many of these are re-worded versions of each other.
Again, look elsewhere in Audible to find more helpful treatments of how to develop inner calm or your meditation practice. I'm glad it was on sale or I'd have felt cheated.
