Historia
Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad - and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there. Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself.

Speechless . . .
Revisado: 05-05-25
After finishing this book, I just sat in my chair. To say that it was better than the first book is a gross understatement. This was utterly remarkable. The pacing, character development, world building and the plot were . . . I'm speechless. By far, the best book that I have read all year. On to Empire of Gold, like right now!

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Fantastic Immersion into the World of Daevabad
Revisado: 04-13-25
I was introduced to Shannon Chakraborty through The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. With that being her most current book and The City of Brass being her first book, you can tell the difference. As this book, at times, reads like a first novel. However, I cannot get enough of the world that Shannon Chakraborty has created, and she has just earned a lifelong fan of her work.

Unbalanced, but It’s Rakim
Revisado: 03-26-25
The music of Rakim brings back crisp memories of the late 80s for me. When I play Paid in Full or Microphone Fiend, I can almost smell the air of nearly 40 years ago. So, when I came across this book, I absolutely had to read it. Unfortunately, it was extremely uneven, which affected the cohesion and flow (which is ironic, since he is the king of lyrics and flow). My major critique is this: If it was broken up into two books (one an autobiography and the other a treatise on songwriting), they would be wonderful books. However, all in one book, it does not work. Back to the lab, my friend. In the meantime, I’m queuing up Paid in Full . . .

Historia
Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

A Wonderful Read
Revisado: 03-24-25
Easily the best book I have read this year, and I am greatly anticipating the next book in the series. All too often, I found myself sitting there with a silly grin on my face. I truly felt like a boy again. Cliche, I know. But, oh so true. For now, while I wait, I am off to the Daevabad Trilogy and The City of Brass (as I try to greedily read everything Chakraborty has written)!

Historia
Growing up in the Liberty City area of Miami, Florida, Katrina “Trina” Taylor spent her childhood feeling relatively sheltered by her mother and stepfather. Trina and her mother had an unbreakable bond, and Liberty City felt like a playground made just for her. And even at a young age, Trina knew what she wanted: to be a powerful, successful, and magnetic woman, a woman who was entirely self-reliant and independent. In Da Baddest, Trina’s voice is, as always, powerful, insightful, witty, and provocative, while also showcasing her vulnerability and deep love for her family, home, and music

Fantastic and Inspirational
Revisado: 02-14-25
I work with young adults coming out of homelessness, most of which are young ladies. I now have a book I can pass along that will provide inspiration, motivation, and encouragement. I cannot wait to see what is next for Trina!

Refreshing and Positive
Revisado: 01-29-25
In a world of salacious autobiographies and "kiss-and-tell" books, Eve's new book is a breath of fresh air. Even though you knew who she was talking about, she told her story with class and poise. This is a book that all young, black women should read. If anything, to just know that they are not alone in their struggle. Eve is a true role model.

Historia
Mossa has returned to Valdegeld on a missing persons case, for which she’ll once again need Pleiti’s insight. Seventeen students and staff members have disappeared from Valdegeld University—yet no one has noticed. The answers to this case may lie on the moon of Io—Mossa’s home—and the history of Jupiter’s original settlements during humanity’s exodus from Earth. But Pleiti’s faith in her life’s work as a scholar of the past has grown precarious, and this new case threatens to further destabilize her dreams for humanity’s future, as well as her own.

I enjoyed this book so much! It feels as if you could take this story and the characters and put them in an English village and it could be the ultimate cozy mystery. But, this is on Jupiter . . . I mean that alone blows PBS Masterpiece Theater out of the water! On to book two!

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I am interested to see where the next book will take us. The only criticism would be that each chapter seemed to almost be a vignette, at times, losing the plot line. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of this motley crew.

In his essay On Anger, the Roman Stoic thinker Seneca argues that anger is the most destructive passion. This splendid new translation of essential selections from On Anger, presented with an enlightening introduction, offers listeners a timeless guide to avoiding and managing anger. Drawing on his great arsenal of rhetoric, including historical examples, anecdotes, quips, and soaring flights of eloquence, Seneca builds his case against anger with mounting intensity.
