Historia
Around one a.m. on an early spring morning, two teenage gangs are arrested after clashing violently in one of Venice’s squares. Commissario Claudia Griffoni, on duty that night, perhaps ill-advisedly walks the last of the boys home because his father, Dario Monforte, failed to pick him up at the Questura. Coincidentally, Guido Brunetti is asked by a wealthy friend of Vice-Questore Patta to vet Monforte for a job, triggering Brunetti’s memory that twenty years earlier Monforte had been publicly celebrated as the hero of a devastating bombing of the Italian military compound in Iraq.

Historia
Count Falier urges his Venetian son-in-law Guido Brunetti to investigate, and preferably intervene in, the seemingly innocent plan of the Count's best friend, the elderly Gonzalo Rodriguez de Tejada, to adopt a much younger man as his son. Under arcane Italian inheritance laws this man would then be heir to Gonzalo's entire fortune, a prospect Gonzalo's friends find appalling. Then Gonzalo unexpectedly, and literally, drops dead on the street, and his good friend Berta Dodson, just arrived in Venice for the memorial service, is strangled in her hotel room.

Leon is my favorite...but
Revisado: 04-07-19
No story here. I love the character development, the Vienna descriptions, the coffee shops Bruniti loves to patronize, but sadly, there was no story. I left it three times, only to return and finally finish it. Even the crime, when it finally occurred did not pass my bieliveablity threshold.
I hesitate to write more, and I guess this might be a spoiler alert...if a man, even in Italy, has been brilliant enough to achieve a large fortune, then surely he would be capable of leaving most of this fortune to his young gay lover, without leaving a dangling detail that leads to murder.

Revisado: 04-07-19
Have no idea if the story was good or not as it was impossible to listen, excessively long pauses blaring, I guess, theme music may it torture.
Please, if we wanted a dramatic presentation, we would go to the movie. Just read the damn book.

So very disappointing
Revisado: 11-13-18
Lee Child is one of those authors that I have read everything he has written and that I eagerly await his next book. I bought this as soon as it was available and I am sorry to say, there is nothing there. I am about half way through and have given up, its not worth the effort. Reacher searching here and there to connect with his family and a couple of knuckle heads with a mysterious package who can't get out of there own way. I need a murder by now, or at least
Reacher getting into a couple of brawls.
Perhaps it will eventually connect, but seriously, is it worth the effort to get there. Scott Brick does as good a job of reading as he possibly can with this turkey. It is the only thing that has kept me going.
Once again I am mystified at all the great reviews, I don't think I am that picky, but maybe so.

Astounded by the reviews
Revisado: 07-12-17
What genius thougt it was good idea to have a black man read a novel about an Irish cop. His pacing is so bad and his accent so out of place hat it is impossible to listen to it. I guess I will get my credit back, buy the printed version and see how that goes.
Usually, unlike Amazon, these reviews are pretty reliable...not this time. Possible there is a decent story here, but I sort of doubt it, though I admit I could not get pass the naration.

So very boring, almost asked for a refund
Revisado: 04-14-17
The very first thing an adventure book about going after terrorists...rule one is keep the story moving. This very boring novel over described everything event and thought. When a Seal Team arrives on site, don't describe how hard the wind was blowing, unless it affects the events, similararly, the moon, the sore leg and on and on and on. Very disappointing book.

i have read/listened to all her books with the exception of the one set in New Orleans that was a real stinker...this was so much worse. I wonder if I can get my credit back as I only listened to 4 really bad chapters. I'm shocked that Rosenblat, who has done all her reading agreed to read this dog.
Don't waste a credit, I guarantee you won't finish it.

Sadly, didn't hold up over time
Revisado: 06-11-13
Back in the day, I could hardly wait for the next Travis McGee novel to be published, always in paperback. I'm not sure if he even published in hard cover, but I certainly couldn't afford those in any case. As a big fan I downloaded this book soon after it was available and just got around to listening to it. Sadly, it just did not hold up over time. He was clearly the model for Jack Reacher and other heroes with a soft heart, but this big tough guy just seems so dated. There is endless meaningless dialog that seems to go nowhere and the scenes with the several damsels in distress just didn't work for this day and age.
The reader was more than adequate, fitting voice to characters unerringly.
This is certainly not a bad book and like all McDonald novels short enough for a long plane ride. Give it a try, for old times sake.
I just bought Quick Red Fox on sale, I'll give you all an update on that one soon.

One of Baldacci's best...
Revisado: 11-29-11
This was one of Baldacci's best in a long time. Expect to see more with this protaganist. Some other reviewers have compared this with the Lee Childs' Reacher novels and it certainly is an apt comparison, but what the heck, I love those books. It took a little getting used to the two naratators, but after a while, it seemed quite natural. Probably not my first choice, but with such a major female lead, it worked out quite well.
The only problem I found and the reason for four instead of five stars, was he just seemed to run out of steam in the wrap-up. A really unrealistic conclusion and bad guy.
