Interesting and heartening story
Revisado: 04-14-25
Deborah Samson’s story is one that needed to be told and the author did a great job of weaving fact and fiction. I am glad the author took the fictional liberties she did, because it made for a very interesting story with a satisfying ending.

Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

A gripping story of love, loss, family and forgiveness
Revisado: 03-26-25
This book drew me in from the start and never let go. Even though the story jumps back and forth in time, it made perfect sense to do so. Love is never as simple as it seems and Beth, Frank, and Gabriel’s story will pull at your heart strings while challenging your sense of duty. I highly recommend reading or listening. The audible narration was excellent.

Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

The best book I’ve read in some time s
Revisado: 12-19-24
I loved the story, the pace, the emotions, and the characters. I was drawn in almost immediately. The main character, Martha Ballard, was observant, gifted, and thoughtful. Through her, the author relayed deep and varied emotions while weaving an unforgettable story. I laughed, I cried, I remembered. My favorite kind of stories are about strong women who fight for family and friends and the things matter. This is an exceptional story.

This story was well written and paced perfectly. It was told from several perspectives which gave a fuller understanding of the dark days during the Civil War. I highly recommend.

A story of bravery and sacrifice
Revisado: 09-14-24
While I enjoyed this book, I often found myself thinking that the story seemed off balance. Sometimes there was too much internal narrative/reflection instead of the story being played out through action and dialogue. The narrator was solid.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Perfectly Paced History
Revisado: 06-17-24
I am an avid fan of Erik Larson’s books and an even bigger fan of Lincoln. This story was about much more than Lincoln, I appreciated learning about the events and people surrounding and leading up to the war. It’s only through the lens of history that the whole story can be told. Excellent book and the narration was great!

Twenty-five years after the end of the war, Noah Ainsworth is still preoccupied with those perilous, exhilarating years as a British SOE operative in France. A head injury sustained on his final operation has caused frustrating gaps in his memory—in particular about the agent who saved his life during that mission gone wrong, whose real name he never knew, nor whether she even survived the war.

Captured my attention and held it to the end
Revisado: 04-26-24
Sometimes I struggle with novels where there are more than one narrator and time-period, but this book was very well done, and kept my engagement throughout. I appreciated seeing these strong and brave female characters balancing feelings about their loved ones they left behind.

The author shared a moving story of an ordinary town and an ordinary family as they move through intensely difficult days. I was moved by the message of grace that can be the light in darkness.
