Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

MUST READ

Wow wow wow. The author is thoroughly well versed and educated. She manages to address broad scale issues while specifying unique examples (without presenting bias). The topic is well researched and written with personal anecdotal evidence. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Historia
Between 1854 and 1930, more than 200,000 orphaned or abandoned children were sent west on orphan trains to find new homes. Some were adopted by loving families; others were not as fortunate. In recent years, some of the riders have begun to share their stories. Andrea Warren alternates chapters about the history of the orphan trains with the story of Lee Nailling, who in 1926 rode an orphan train to Texas.

I’m a huge fan of this author, so I downloaded this book without much thought but was pleasantly surprised when it addressed postpartum depression. It weaves a fantastic story between pre-roe v Wade and modern times through a woman’s lens.

Historia
India Allwood grew up wanting to be an actor. Armed with a stack of index cards (for research/line memorization/make-shift confetti), she goes from awkward sixteen-year-old to Broadway ingenue to TV superhero. Her new movie is a prestige picture about adoption, but its spin is the same old tired story of tragedy. India is an adoptive mom in real life though. She wants everyone to know there’s more to her family than pain and regret. So she does something you should never do—she tells a journalist the truth: it’s a bad movie.

Incredible
Revisado: 06-30-24
Laurie frankel is my new favorite author. This book spans beyond child welfare and reaches the upper echelons of society that need to hear these truths. This book is genuine and deep and truthful and honest and brave. While fiction, it draws from so many real life emotions and I couldn’t love it more. I have always wanted to adopt, for no particular reason, and I feel validated by the main character’s stance on the topic.

Historia
With poignant insight and humor, Frank Vertosick, Jr., MD, describes some of the greatest challenges of his career, including a six-week-old infant with a tumor in her brain, a young man struck down in his prime by paraplegia, and a minister with a .22-caliber bullet lodged in his skull. Told through intimate portraits of Vertosick's patients and unsparing-yet-fascinatingly detailed descriptions of surgical procedures, When the Air Hits Your Brain illuminates both the mysteries of the mind and the realities of the operating room.

TRULY INCREDIBLE
Revisado: 06-20-24
I don’t even know where to begin. The authors ability to articulate the mundanity of hospital days paralleled with the complexity of surgery is unlike any other book of its kind. My husband is a surgeon and this book was SO VALIDATING in that I often tell my friends: “doctors are just people. They make stupid mistakes. There’s risk and even if that risk is 5% it doesn’t mean it won’t happen to you. Advocate for yourself and don’t take what the dr says as the gods awful truth.” People are so shocked when I tell them the things that happen or try to explain a day in the life of a resident and Dr. Vertosick does so with ease.
Enthralling, engaging, mind blowing, specific, massive, it’s everything.

Historia
Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it."

Historia
Managing stress comes down to understanding - and solving - what therapist Megan Bruneau calls the stress equation. According to Bruneau, stress is the result of thinking that your perceived responsibilities are greater than your perceived capacity to take them on. In this workshop, Bruneau tells us how to change those perceptions to manage stress, whether it originates at the office or elsewhere. From understanding that you can’t do everything yourself to taking time to boost your mood, Bruneau identifies concrete ways to help you de-stress and handle life’s messiness.
