Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Hopeful, But Doesn't Gloss Over Truth and Hard Issues

Possibly one of the best memoirs and Audible productions I've ever heard. Read by the author. Amazing ability to recall details and feelings of his youth. I recognize the accuracy of his descriptions.

Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Spaghetti of Plots and Charaters - Meandering
Revisado: 10-31-24
Liked 1-3. Random animal characters began to become overused in 4 with the otters. I tuned out with the latest random reptile direction in this one. Bobs becoming too numerous to track. What was once reasonable hard sci fi is drifting now toward fantasy genre. I will probably pass on 6, since this one was truly painful to finish. Its like the author is tired and just needed a payment from publisher, so just pulled some random storyline notes together to get this one out the door. Narration is good.

No More After Book 2
Revisado: 02-10-23
Enjoyed Book 1 well enough. I only gave this a 2 overall because i was able to force myself to finish it. I would have returned it but thought I'd gone too far along to do that by the time I realized I was in a hole. It must get better, I thought. Wrong. Un hindsight, this was downhill from Chapter 1. Characters made of cardboard, with storyline to match. This needed more rewrites, an editor, and some peer review. This read like a different author compared to Book 1.
Performers had a knack for what sounded like intentional mocking of American accents. Intentional? Or, maybe just ignorant.

Historia
At the time of the French Revolution, one of Britain's most skillful naval officers, Charles Saunders Hayden, is a young lieutenant, the son of an English father and a French mother. His abilities and his loyalty to the king of England are beyond dispute, yet his career seems doomed by his "mixed" heritage and lack of political connections. Consequently, Hayden is assigned to an aging frigate, the Themis, under the command of Captain Josiah Hart, a man known as "Faint Hart" throughout the service.

I wish Simon Vance had also performed the others in this series. I'm going to try the next one. If I can't get into it as well with a less dynamic reader, I'll likely just return the audible and get an e-copy. TBD

Historia
In the year 1740, Commodore (later Admiral) George Anson embarked on a voyage that would become one of the most famous exploits in British naval history. Sailing through poorly charted waters, Anson and his men encountered disaster, disease, and astonishing success. They circumnavigated the globe and seized a nearly incalculable sum of Spanish gold and silver, but only one of the five ships survived.

Could not get past the reader's voice being so completely inconsistent with the characters. A story about young midshipman, but the voice was that of an elderly gentleman. Might try OBrian audio again at some point, but not this title. Might be okay as a read, instead of Audible.

Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Incredible Book and Outstanding Performance
Revisado: 01-18-22
Dickens works remain wonderful even 170+ years removed from the time of publishing. What amazes me so much about this is that he captures truth in human thoughts/interactions that are as relevant now as when written - easily recognizable. Even when the details of an era differ, he still captured something basic in human interactions/personal thoughts that transcends time. I know that sounds corny, but I really saw that in this - so much so that I found myself laughing out loud at David's various experiences and descriptions.
"Richard Armitage's Performance Broke the Scale!" was to have been my original title. I now need more than 5 stars to rate Audible works properly. The Story, itself, and the Performance taken together yield a score greater than the sum. Copperfield has many characters, and Armitage masterfully captured them all. I highly recommend this Audible title. I do think it is the best I have experienced so far - edging out some others that are beyond great, too.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Too Much Fa Left Political Ranting
Revisado: 11-10-21
I was encouraged at the beginning of the work - actually seemed to have been a work of historical fiction at first. However, beyond the initial framing, the story quickly built from an initial anti-middle-class indictment (complete with close-minded ("un-woke"), abusive Caucasian parents), into a crescendo of anti-male, anti-capitalist, anti-you-name-it topics of the far Left - unhinged Leftist rage. The characters seemed a bit flat and became easily predictable after the reader becomes aware that they are only tools to blather tenets of the communist manifesto and various modern day woke-isms.
Whelan was okay as a narrator. A bit overly-dramatic at times, but she was just interpreting the glurge of the storyline, I suppose.

The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

Revisado: 10-20-21
Wonderfully done. True to the original - virtually seamless. Thankfully completed prior to fascist wokeness, which would have destroyed the necessary mid-19th century setting.
Yes, the narrator had an older voice; however, she performed the character/actor inflections, nuances, etc. very well. She had great range for all the characters in the story, across all ages.

Least Favorite of the Heinlein Books
Revisado: 08-04-21
I was probably somewhere around half way through the book when I realized that there was practically no story involved. It just kind of meandered through different episodes associated with a rather unexciting main character. Perhaps the reader put much thought about the presentation and selected a monotone delivery as being most appropriate to the character; yet, I found that almost unbearable as a listener. About 11 hours into this I found myself wishing it would end. I actually would tune the words of the reader out and try to hum (yes "hum") the constant monotone note she read in. It was always in tune which confirmed my assertion that she would keep the same note while reading. Think Buddhist chant for 13 hours.

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. Great Hard Sci Fi Title
Revisado: 06-29-21
Highly recommend. Really enjoyed this unique twist on first contact. The narrative addressed physics and general engineering approaches quite accurately, which was refreshing. So many authors ignore this and the stories suffer because of the lack of scientific context. Andy Weir does an excellent job of building a believable scenario with good underpinning of the science involved. Ray Porter was excellent and a good fit for this project. This book goes into my top 10 list of best of its type .
