Nice enjoyable quick book.
Revisado: 10-19-21
Definitely a product of it's time. It's undertones of sexism and women's rights are great I only wish it had gone a bit further and made the female lead even stronger. But for the time it was written it was great and overall an enjoyable story. I wish Dick Hill was a bit better at creating more distinct voices particularly in this book where so many of the names are very similar to the ear.

I hate when they add music and sound effects
Revisado: 08-12-21
I hate when they add music and sound effects to audiobooks and this series is full of bad music. The previous book The Wood Nymph and the Cranky Saint has a chapter where you miss key plot points because they messed up and put loud music over the narrator so you can't hear it.
Plot is okay, slow and it feels like it is mostly a setup for a future book. What is missing is the humor I enjoyed in the previous two books.
What made it enjoyable to me originally was a fresh from school bad student wizard fumbling his way through his first career. This book jumps ahead a good amount of years so you lose all that as he is now a presumably fully competent wizard with many years of royal wizard experience under his belt. Had they had the adventure without the jump in time from the previous novel. The opportunities for humor and character growth could have been there without any significant plot changes.
I will continue with the series but with reservations.

Historia
Many consider Franklin the most fascinating American man who ever lived. A scientist, businessman, diplomat, author, inventor, philosopher and politician, he is America's original Renaissance man. His remarkable and varied accomplishments include the discovery of electricity and the modernization of the postal system. Brilliant and bawdy, a master statesman and a cultural icon, Franklin was so important and popular in his day that, according to the author, "... only Washington mattered as much."

History tends to bore but I couldnt stop listening
Revisado: 10-06-10
I decided that I rectify the terrible situation which was my knowledge of American history, due to no small part that history lessons tend to put me into a deep sleep that many of my past teachers have come to rue. However I found this book both entertaining and informative. The author and narrator do an excellent job of taking material that could be bland and ZZZZ worthy and making it accesible to the average listener. To this I found myself sitting in the car 10 minutes after I was home to hear what Ben did next. Brands covers not only the big important events that Franklin was apart of but the smaller things things that made him the man he was and does so with out losing the interest of the listener. If you are interested in learning about one of the most important figures in American history I highly reccomend this book. If only my history teachers in highscool had spoken with the information of Brands and the passion and eloquence of Runger I would be more sleep deprived now but vastly more informed.

Historia
Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope.

Fantastic book - Terrible narrator
Revisado: 10-06-10
I find the character development and plot to be wonderful and entertaining. Brooks does a terrific job of intertwining classic fantasy elements with a man of the modern world and making the clash of the two a enthralling story. However the narrator does a terrible job Willow a beutiful and magical woman sounds like a smoker in drag, ok this happens sometimes with male narrators doing female voices not optimal but understandable. What is not acceptable however is the butchering of Questor Thews and Abernathy their interplay is key to lightning the plot however their quick witted banter becomes dull, and loses the subtle undertones of their relationship. Overall great story and character development that only gets better in the series, which is only brought down by a poor narrator.

Historia
North, Central, and South American Indians have a rich religious heritage, though much has been lost since these peoples were conquered by Europeans. Characteristic features of Native American religion included the master of the animals, a protective spirit of a species or of all animals. Shamans, ecstatic medicine men, used supernatural powers to cure the ill. Totemism was a mysterious religious bond between the human clan and their animal guardians.

Interesting information and great narrator
Revisado: 10-06-10
I was looking for a book on Native American religions and unfortunately due to the dirth of material available on audible on this subject the choices are limited. The good aspect of this is that this book covers a huge amount of information over a vast amount of time and area. This means that you dont get to learn alot of details about any specific tribe or regions but get a quick run down on the main points and differences of each region. The material presented is very interesting and done very well. Overall this book is great if you want to learn about a large amount of tribes and how they came to be in the Americas. This is a greater starter book for background information.

Historia
Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil god Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgrath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe. That was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the man without a shadow had haunted him for years.

Good not great- with excellent narrator
Revisado: 10-06-10
The book is slow to start off with and the complicated back story does not help to get you drawn into the story. However once you get past that you find yourself quickly wrapped up into the developing plot. The narrator does an excellent job with voice consistency in his characters and adds extra emphasis to the story by using voices that actually fit each figures persona. If you are the kind of person that likes everything to be wrapped up in one book this one is not for you, however if you enjoyed Tolkein or Martin this is right up your alley.
