Historia
In 1995, Arkady Babchenko was an 18-year-old law student in Moscow when he was drafted into the Russian army and sent to Chechnya. It was the beginning of a torturous journey from naïve conscript to hardened soldier that took Babchenko from the front lines of the first Chechen War in 1995 to the second in 1999. He fought in major cities and tiny hamlets, from the bombed-out streets of Grozny to anonymous mountain villages.

They're a lot like us.
Revisado: 04-08-21
The story is compelling. Whoever translated this from Russian deserves an award. it reads like something written by a lifelong English man or American with a great sense of irony, tragedy... and best of all... humor. I don't write reviews often. This may be my first. But I hope I succeed in getting you to listen to this man's story. SS

A bloody revolt by a North African prince and a plot to seize control of Rome are the subjects of two short masterpieces of ancient history by the illustrious Roman chronicler, Sallust. He could not have chosen two more dramatic episodes in the long history of this city.

A twisted tale.
Revisado: 12-16-20
The arrangement of the telling is odd. I thought I'd missed something when they described the fate of Cataline... before they got around to telling you who he was and what he'd done. Cicero does Tarantino (Pulp Fiction).

Historia
Denied citizenship by the Roman Empire, a soldier named Alaric changed history by unleashing a surprise attack on the capital city of an unjust empire. Stigmatized and relegated to the margins of Roman society, the Goths were violent "barbarians" who destroyed "civilization," at least in the conventional story of Rome's collapse. But a slight shift of perspective brings their history, and ours, shockingly alive.

Can't finish it.
Revisado: 06-21-20
In the age of the bad orange man, we get a thinly (if at all) veiled indictment of America and its immigration policies within the first five minutes of a book about Alaric the Goth. Mix in some convoluted views on the role of Christianity... Alaric the Goth was a Christian but since he's also an illegal immigrant... he's okay... and the rise of Christianity and Christian values of Rome justified the aggressions of Alaric the Goth... and you have the beginnings of an unbearable (returning) book about Alaric the Goth. And by the way... all of this comes after the writer clearly states that there is little or no information about Alaric the Goth. That's okay... we'll just improvise and use the writer's political compass. Good grief.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Wanting something different over the course of this lockdown thing... I listened to the first Fiction book in years. I thought I'd try something I'd heard of before and knew little about. This book fit the bill. The narrator was the absolute best. And here I am... a middle-aged man in his 50's... writing the best review I know how to write... for a book about rabbits.

Historia
White is Bret Easton Ellis's first work of nonfiction. Already the bad boy of American literature, from Less Than Zero to American Psycho, Ellis has also earned the wrath of right-thinking people everywhere with his provocations on social media, and here he escalates. Eschewing convention, he embraces views that will make many in literary and media communities cringe, as he takes aim at anti-Trump fixation, coastal elites, corporate censorship, Hollywood, identity politics, Generation Wuss, "woke" cultural watchdogs, and more.

Should be Required Reading For Liberals
Revisado: 05-23-19
Thanks, Bret. I wasn't sure if this was a topic I could maintain interest in for nearly seven hours. I was born a few weeks before you in 1964 so the discussion of your childhood life resonated with me. But, I am a guy who watches, reads, and listens to conservative media and have for decades... since that great day in 1987 when it all began.
What could you possibly tell me that I don't already know? Well... when it comes to the views of liberals and the destruction of one particular view by a member of that liberal cabal... you can teach most of us a lot. Great book. Listened all night. You really aren't a liberal. And once liberals are forced to confront what liberalism is and given specific policies and shown the effect of those policies under liberal and conservative principals... many, if not most liberals will also discover conservative leanings they knew nothing about.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.
