Easily the best book in this series and one that i would recommend on its own. The writing is superb and the story line is fantastic. The narrator did an outstanding job too! Just an overall damn good book.

It helps if you have read the other two and are invested in the characters a little more than just picking up this as a single book.

I did want a little more out of one of the characters, but you can't have everything.

Seriously, DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK.

This was not a bad first attempt from Mark Topping. I am sure as Topping continues to write his story telling will improve.

The pros for this book are that the story itself is interesting and something I want to follow and I would like to see where he goes with the characters.

The negatives are that the writing itself just seems to lack depth in places and could be more comprehensive overall. I wanted way more from the fight scenes and from the bigger interactions that the main characters have. It really felt like "scenes" just ended or could have been fleshed out more to give a better store or suck the reader in more.

I hate to compare writers, but I really wanted Toppings writing to be more like Giles Kristian.

I see potential here, but it really needs to be more in-depth writing to "complete' the story.

Still has some useless sound effects, but a lot fewer than book 1. The overall story and telling of the story have gotten a lot better than the first book as well.

I am also invested in seeing how it turns out now, so that says something about the books.

Both the narration and the writing were a little sophomoric at the beginning. It really did take about half the book for me to get into both the story and the narrators idiosyncrasies. I am still a little annoyed at the "extras" or sound effects they added to the narration. They were wholly unnecessary and actually distracted me from the book and took me out of the story for a bit.

OK, with that said. The story picks up and is very entertaining. I am hoping that it carries through to the next book this way without having to go back and start off slow.

Would you try another book from W.E.B. Griffin and William E. Butterworth and/or Alexander Cendese?

While the writing here wasn't what I found with the Honor Bound Series my biggest issue was the narration.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something not by Alexander Cendese

Would you be willing to try another one of Alexander Cendese’s performances?

No

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

The attempt at voices for most characters was laughable. I understand there are many people in the book and the narrator is trying to separate them all out to be their own character, but some of the accents and attempts for voices are just down right off putting. I stopped the book twice and tried to go back to it simply because the narration was so bad.

I was worried about how mark greaney would fair with the Ryan series. I have read some of his other stuff and honestly did not like it all that much. He has done an absolute knock out job with this though. I have been pleasantly surprised with his storytelling and where he goes with the characters. I would like a little more in depth delving into jack Ryan jrs character, but I can see how they don't want it to become a series about just him.

Keep up the good work

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No I would not recommend this audio book. Go buy the print version, read that and then buy the next book in the series on audio book. That one is narrated by a different person.

The narrator of this book speaks so slow. I had to adjust the speed of the playback to 1.75 to make the cadence and rhythm of the narration seem normal. This though changes the inflection and voices that are done for the characters. It was a trade off I was willing to make after about 10 minutes of listening.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The writing and plot were great. A great second book in the series.

What didn’t you like about Michael Russotto’s performance?

No. I will never listen to anything by this person again. His speech pattern was slow to the point of me almost eating the cost of this book and moving on to another. I adjusted the playback speed to compensate, but that changed the rhythm of the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I would rather not give away anything to people reading this review who haven't read the book. There are some plot twists I didn't see coming though.

What disappointed you about The Gray Man?

I understand unrealistic plots and expect them in this genre of books. I want to be a little wowed by the characters amazing ability to get out of a situation, but this book took it to a level that made it hard to stay in the book. I get the want and need for non-stop action, but by making the hero take as much damage as the author did, I spent too much time questioning the premise and ability of him to continue rather than enjoying the plot.Switching Characters also doesn't mean you switch writing style for those characters. Just because you are writing about an 8 year old girl, doesn't mean you have to write every line dedicated from her perspective. By switching to the words "Mommy and Daddy" whenit wasn't even clear that it was from her perspective as well as other colloquial aspects of an 8 year old the author pulled me out of the story mentally.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure yet

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jay Snyder?

Yes, the Narrator did a great job

What character would you cut from The Gray Man?

THE GRANDAUGHTER!!
