Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Splendid book
Revisado: 07-02-24
A splendid, if difficult, rendering of a horrible time in the history of the United States. Unfortunately, it is a history that far too many people have forgotten—if, indeed, they were ever truly aware.

Historia
From Paul Ham, winner of the NSW Premier's Prize for Australian History, comes the story of ordinary men in the grip of a political and military power struggle that determined their fate and has foreshadowed the destiny of the world for a century. Passchendaele epitomises everything that was most terrible about the Western Front. The photographs never sleep of this four-month battle, fought from July to November 1917, the worst year of the war.

A troubling yet important read
Revisado: 08-21-23
This is a superb book — well researched, poetically written, and marvelously read. However, make no mistake — it is disturbing. The battle of Passchendaele was part of a “War of Attrition ,” one of the most stupid approaches to fighting a war. And this was a war that, in and of itself, was particularly insane and stupid.

A good retelling of a seminal event
Revisado: 06-19-23
I was 2 years old when this election took place so have no personal memory of it. However, I do remember my parents and grandparents still talking about it years later. The failure of the news media of that era, to say nothing of famous pollsters (Gallup and Roper foremost among them) to comprehend the mood of voters is well covered in this book. Highly recommended.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Historia
On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. On September 13, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed 39 men - hostages as well as prisoners.

Well worth listening
Revisado: 03-05-20
This is a painful and disturbing history. However, even though I lived through the time of the Attica uprising, there was much that occurred that I had never heard about. This book fills in the gaps. And it is precisely those facts omitted in 1971 and the years immediately following, that this book reveals. Those facts are disgusting and shameful. Apparently, the coverup and denial continues to this day.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

First rate in every respect. TBI, PTSD, addiction, domestic violence — common results of combat deployment are handled with honesty and compassion. The 18-year quest to return a KIA to Arlington National Cemetery is equally well-done.
