Radio’s Jeff Smulyan has always been an island of truth in a sea of fibbers and Never Ride a Rollercoaster Upside Down is a great example of the globe trotting Emmis Communications Corp. founder and entrepreneur’s ability to tell a story truthfully even when he has egg on his face. And like most in the media business know, there are a lot of eggs to go around. But as usual, Smulyan, 75, has a knack for mixing the humor and irony to a level of being educational in this up and down ride through a myriad of business ventures. His successes like LA’s K-Power were storied fortune-builders while his adventure in radio Hungry zapped Emmis revenues for years. Smulyan’s ability —along with the smart and talented management team his collected over the past nearly five decades — is a testament to true grit, focus, and the ability to profit from doing the right thing. In a time when truth and honesty are hard to come by, this read is a charming reminder on how to conduct yourself and your business. Perhaps Smulyan’s best lesson here is “you never do good business with bad people.”

Delia Ephron makes the case that life is about smartness, luck and true grit. But perhaps most importantly, it’s about being surrounded by friends and family who love and care about you, particularly when the chips are down, your emotions are shot and your health is in the tank. This doesn’t feel like a support or community help project but it is, it’s just wrapped as a Valentine for the soul. It is a story of hope and a story of love.

And that Ephron reads her very personal story with such strength means the listener might need to hit pause just to catch their breath.

You will send this audiobook to the friends you love and the people you care about.

Although written in 2013, Gladwell skillfully crafts a David scenario that perfectly fits the Ukraine today as the new David. Battling, and for now, beating Goliath against all odds. But even before the Russian invasion comes into play, Gladwell’s work is brilliantly thought provoking and inspiring.

Zelda was Scott Fitzgerald’s Shooting Star

This is a terrific story but a bit depressing how Scott treated, and stole (never credited) from Zelda. And how he drank himself to death. But it’s a great character story that includes the personalities of the day including Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein and the rest of the Jazz Age. Zelda was born with the crazy seed, Scott fertilized it.

Richard Quest is generally informative and entertaining on CNN but he clearly needs an editor when writing a book. A few hours into The Vanishing of Flight MH370 this reader vanished from the audio screen. Probably never to resurface because I crashed into the abyss listing to Quest's overly dramatic, horrifyingly repetitive prose. Probably like the passengers of Flight MH370, I felt like 12-year-old girl (Linda Blair) in the 1973 file, The Exorcist, screaming "Mommy, make it stop!"). And it's too bad, I bought the Audible book to find out what happened to that plane but my curiosity was worn-down by the hand-wringing, and generally unimportant and endless details. So, this is a rare an unfinished listen.
