Historia
This stunningly personal document and extraordinary history of the turbulent '60s and early '70s displays James Baldwin's fury and despair more deeply than any of his other works. In vivid detail he remembers the Harlem childhood that shaped his early consciousness, the later events that scored his heart with pain - the murders of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, his sojourns in Europe and in Hollywood, and his return to the American South to confront a violent America face-to-face.

Prophetic
Revisado: 07-19-24
Once again, Baldwin reveals his prophetic nature with this searing, timely reflection. An enchanting journey through his mind and heart woven with (then) current events and US History. Anyone interested in learning the machinations of white supremacy and the havoc it wreaks (on the US and abroad) should read Baldwin. This incredibly accessible book is a good place to begin.

Helpful!
Revisado: 07-18-24
I was skeptical about this book because I had just completed another Unf*ck book. The narration here was infinitely better, and the language far less profane. I really enjoyed it! Kudos to Erin the narrator here! I’m going to listen to other books in the series that are narrates.
I recommend this to anyone who is working to redraw their personal and professional boundaries.

Historia
Ida B. Wells was a powerful churchwoman and witness for justice and equity from 1878 to 1931. Born enslaved, her witness flowed through the struggles for justice in her lifetime, especially in the intersections of African Americans, women, and those who were poor. Her life is a profound witness for faith-based work of visionary power, resistance, and resilience for today’s world, when the forces of injustice stand in opposition to progress.

More Wells, Please
Revisado: 02-26-23
I enjoyed learning about Ida B. Wells-Barnett. I was less interested in learning about the authors in this book. There personal narratives are interesting, but perhaps stories better told in their (auto)biographies. I look forward to reading other Wells biographies, especially by Duster and Giddings.

Historia
Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick is an outstanding collection of stories about love and migration, gender and class, racism and sexism that proudly reflect African-American folk culture. Brought together for the first time in one volume, they include eight of Hurston’s "lost" Harlem stories, which were found in forgotten periodicals and archives. These stories challenge conceptions of Hurston as an author of rural fiction and include gems that flash with her biting, satiric humor, as well as more serious tales.

Wow!
Revisado: 02-13-23
I listen to and read non-fiction exclusively, yet this book called to me. I’m so glad that I answered. Zora Neale Hurston’s brilliance is astounding. I read Eyes years ago, but had not heard of Hitting a Straight Lick. I loved it! I laughed and cried and sat slack jawed. Ms. Ellis’ performance is stellar! I loved every moment of this audiobook. I recommend it highly!

Historia
America's great promise of equality has always rung hollow in the ears of African Americans. But today the situation has grown even more dire. From the murders of black youth by the police to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act to the disaster visited upon poor and middle-class black families by the Great Recession, it is clear that black America faces an emergency - at the very moment the election of the first black president has prompted many to believe we've solved America's race problem.

Listen and Learn!
Revisado: 03-13-22
Excellent book!! I’ve been meaning to read this for a couple years. My only regret is that I didn’t read it sooner. Dr. Glaude is a teacher, prophet, and even a preacher! Listen and learn about the historical trajectory of democracy and racism in USA, and be inspired to change its course for We the People, and our common good.
