There's something about this novel that feels so perfectly clean, stark, and new, but it's still got the heart and subdued magic of Murakamis other great works.

More than a return to form

There's plenty of tense action here, and plenty of Herbert's great philosophical vision, with none of the vagaries or repetition that weighed it down in past books. He obviously had a lot to talk about. Compelling new places and characters arise with ancient connections to the ones we loved before, and a changed Bene Gesserit makes a much more sympathetic protagonist than I would have expected. This may be my new favorite book in the series.

The scientist fascinating, the crime stories are intriguing, and the scene of early 20th century New York is crafted perfectly. This book is a page-turner with real substance.

I'm a huge fan of horror and psychological thrillers, an ally to feminists and an appreciator of classic literature, and The Yellow Wallpaper absolutely satisfied all those sensibilities. It is an absolutely thrilling narrative; it's strange, it's funny, it's sad, then it's chilling. The two or three other stories I listened to in this collection were less well crafted and blatantly proselytizing; still enjoyable listens, for what they are, but they've got the tone of Chick gospel tracts (even if their message isn't quite so deplorable).
