Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Interesting, a bit uneven. 3.5 stars
Revisado: 03-29-14
I have been wanting to read/listen to this book for a while. I did enjoy it but have some pet peeves. I was interested in both the story of the Worlds Fair & in the intrigue of the story of Dr Holmes but did feel that combining the two was a bit of a stretch... The influences of the worlds fair were very interesting, but certainly not as compelling as the other narrative. As far as narration goes, I kept wishing that Edward Hermann was telling me the story. Scott Brick's style seems better suited for mystery than history as he often sounded over emphatic and sinister when it was not called for.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Bryson is consistently great!
Revisado: 03-29-14
I think the first ever audiobook I listened to was by Bill Bryson & I keep coming back for more! Bryson has the ability to make history really come alive. He is able to weave disparate stories together seamlessly and find amusing anecdotes throughout! I love his narration- you can hear the amusement in his voice, plus I just love the way he says "Warshington"!

I knew BJ Novak from The Office & did not think I was a big fan but have changed my mind after listening to these stories! I laughed out loud several times while listening! BJ Novak's writerly "voice" really resonated with me & several times I thought, " that's clever!" Or " So true!". Great narration by BJ & several others including Mindy Kaling.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Important, Thought provoking Book
Revisado: 03-29-14
Worth listening to for anyone in health care or disaster preparedness. Very thought provoking-What would you do when caring for seriously ill patients during severe circumstances with little to no outside support? Why were the outcomes at this hospital so different from other New Orleans hospitals during Hurricane Katrina. I did have some trouble keeping people's names straight - not sure if that is because I listened in smaller chunks, or due to the writing or narration.
