Historia
Astrophysicist and best-selling author Mario Livio draws on his own scientific expertise to provide captivating insights into how Galileo reached his bold new conclusions about the cosmos and the laws of nature. A freethinker who followed the evidence wherever it led him, Galileo was one of the most significant figures behind the scientific revolution. He believed that every educated person should know science as well as literature, and insisted on reaching the widest audience possible, publishing his books in Italian rather than Latin.

Pot meet Kettle
Revisado: 02-17-25
This would have been a relatively interesting biography of Galileo if the author had stuck with the story and the science. However, he added interpretation that was so politically biased it would have made the inquisition look balanced. It is almost as if Livio got a grant to brand as heretic everyone who disagrees with him. Then he suggests that the opposition must necessarily be duplicative of the Inquisition and the Catholic church in their treatment of Galileo because they were the "bad guys" in the Galileo story. It is largely the age-old experience of the pot calling the shiny copper kettle black. Livio suggests that all those who disagree with the leftist opinion on climate change must necessarily be science deniers, while there has yet to be a single doomsday prophecy of the climate change advocates that actually came true. I have been around long enough to remember the 70s when the climate change activists were arguing that if mankind didn't change their evil ways an impending ice age was going to wipe us all out. I also remember the doomsday prophecies of Al Gore who claimed that by 2020 the sea level would rise by 6 feet and millions of Americans would be displaced. Livio pays lip service to the evidence based approach to science, but then, without evidence, asserts that those whom he labels as science deniers are the ones who are acting without evidence. It is like he didn't even read his own book to note that his position is so much more like dogma that those he was criticizing. But that's okay, according to Livio, because the terrible consequences of disagreeing with the party line will mean the end of the world as we know it and so we must do whatever is necessary to stop that terrible "global warming," which, of course, means shouting down anyone who disagrees, rather than actually presenting factual evidence.
In terms of the durability of Mr. Livio's book, it is nothing more than a flash in the pan. Time has already shown his position to be dead -- he just hasn't realized it yet.

Morals and Oaths out the Window
Revisado: 01-27-25
Before this book, you could not find a bigger Brandon Sanderson fan. This was not just a disappointment, but a betrayal. I know that it is important for an author to surprise the reader, but good quality decent literature that I can listen to with my family is so hard to find that when an author consistently produces it, I come to depend on that author. Unfortunately, when that author then decides to introduce homosexuality not only as permissible but commendable, and then focuses the culmination of an extended story arc to show that the best result is achieved when the best of men renounce oaths (after emphasizing the importance of honor and integrity throughout the series) I've found that I can no longer keep Brandon on my "reliably good" list. What a disappointment!

Whether it’s a teenage runaway or an actor kidnapped by cultists, the victim comes first. Money is an afterthought. That confuses a lot of clients. 4th grade?
Revisado: 11-16-24
I only got through the first episode and couldn't take any more. The plot was juvenile but the language was reprehensible. if you are going to write like 4th graders are your target, clean up the language. It was kind of like the playground where 4th graders were trying out the worst profanity they could think of. The story line had potential for the preteen crowd, but I would never share it with my family because of the filthy language.

Historia
Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori are coming of age in Uganda in the 1990s. Outstanding students, they believe in being good humans before they are kidnapped and forced into the fanatical Lord’s Resistance Army. In a legion of young recruits, no one gets closer than Anthony to powerful messianic warlord Joseph Kony and his darkest secrets. To stay sane as he spirals through chaos, Anthony clings to his childhood lessons about being a good human. Florence’s upbringing grounds her, too, helping her keep her dreams alive even as she’s pulled deeper into the insanity of Kony’s war.

Deeply moving, but deeply disturbing
Revisado: 09-20-24
The book was very well written and well read. The terrible atrocities propagated by the leaders of the LRA on the boys, girls, women and others they kidnapped, as well as innocent civilians are exposed with enough detail to horrify the soul, but that is thankfully overcome by the brilliant message of love, endurance, perseverance, and redemption. I am in awe of what the protagonists went through and overcame, but even more in awe of who they became. Thank you for sharing their story.

Is that language really necessary?
Revisado: 11-09-23
This was an engaging story with interesting albeit wildly outrageous historical revisionism mixed in. What blew my mind was the complete inability of the author to express excitement, frustration, anger, enthusiasm, or any other emotion without F-bombs and every other profanity and explicative she could come up with. I know that some people talk that way, but I also know that most don't. I also know that it is totally unnecessary for the purpose of effective and intelligent communication.
Throw in the violence and adultery and you have a solid Rated R book. Be sure not to listen within hearing of children or anyone else with sensitivities. I share my library with my family and I'll be deleting this book because of the offensive language.
Audible: Still waiting for a rating system so that I and others with standards can avoid the inappropriate books.

With his wife, Sarah, and son, Michael, he studied the alien Tyr for years, hidden among their complex societies. Their mission should have ended with the arrival of a replacement team. Instead, the Clays’ corporate overlords choose a death sentence: an invasion fleet to conquer the Tyr.

Liberal Tropes
Revisado: 11-09-23
A story with potential is overwhelmed by all of the tired worn-out liberal tropes. Corporations are evil -- check. The white male (human) dominates and ruins everything he touches -- check. All indigenous peoples (species) are despised, dismissed and or subjugated -- check. When a sci-fi writer begins to focus more on making political points than telling an engaging story, then I'm done with that author.
Of course, if you happen to live in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or some other liberal haven, this might be just what you are looking for.

unsatisfying
Revisado: 08-12-23
A cynical take on right/wrong/justice and the people responding to uphold them. Embodies the leftist perspectives that no defendant should ever be punished, all conservative politicians are corrupt, and morality is outdated (and generally just a facade). I enjoy a good legal thriller, but this was a little disappointing on many levels.

Lt. Commander Joshua Manson's focus on his career has taken him to many places, just not the one he has always dreamed of going: space. His sometimes controversial methods during missions have given him the reputation of being a soldier who doesn't always play by the rules. A challenging mission leaves Josh questioning if he'll have a career at all, so he is surprised when he is offered the chance to command a mission in space to investigate an unknown object. The more he learns, the more determined he is to lead it.

If your personal or family standards are opposed to pornography, avoid this book, even if it is on sale. The story line was going along great only to be interrupted by a totally unnecessary romp through the gutter of an excessively explicit sexual encounter.
Once again, I plead with Audible to institute a rating system so that readers can know to avoid books that they will find to be morally reprehensible.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Historia
For over a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative impacts of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing--including their unrivaled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people. And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right.
