Predictable and formulaic, with surprising depth, occasionally.

Stone reaches deep and brings richness to her characters at times. Her storylines are fairly predictable and formulaic, and somehow gripping enough to keep me reading through The Edge of Collapse and Nuclear Dawn. This one, Nuclear Dawn, carries some timely messages about the state of the world, particularly the U.S., that we would do well to contemplate.

The book has its share of literary gaffs - Stone would do well to consider another editor, if one of her aims is good writing. Sentences that would have gotten her C in 7th grade English have slipped past - perhaps, giving the benefit of doubt, they’re intended to be left in to maintain a homey lack of intellectual elitism? In any case, they were a little jarring to me. But not frequent enough that I found them hard to overlook.

Factually, Stone is well researched, mostly. On the tech side she’s done her homework, not giving out with many cringe-worthy oopsies. I did wonder, toward the end, if she has actually visited the Everglades, at the point where she mentions one of our protagonists suffering the “icy waters” and the “freezing winds”…

All that said, I did enjoy both the series mentioned above very much. They definitely had my fight-flight reflexes going to the point where I needed to yell at the characters like a kid in a scary movie: “DON’T GO INTO THE BASEMENT, YOU IDIOT!!” And found myself tearing up at some of the rare and precious sweetnesses sprinkled here and there.

So thanks, Kyla Stone - I look forward to more!

Started this series out of order, with The Left Hand of Darkness - which I loved so much I scurried back here to begin at the beginning and soak up the whole delicious tale.

Thanks to Tim Ferris for the recommendation - I hadn’t come across Mr. Abercrombie’s work previously. Usually more of a hard-science sci-fi reader. But I’m awfully glad to have found him! Use of language, characters with truth in every one, storylines of gold, that are familiar, but not predictable.

This is the seventh or eighth I’ve listened to of his, and they do not grow old, for all the aforementioned reasons, but not least thanks to Steven Pacey’s voice! There is a master of the art and craft of voice acting of ever there was one.
