House of Roots and Ruin is a beautifully written gothic fantasy that keeps you hooked from the very first page. The lush, atmospheric prose and eerie setting draw you into a world brimming with secrets, family curses, and dark magic. Erin A. Craig masterfully builds suspense, making it nearly impossible to put the book down—this is a true page-turner. The twists and revelations keep coming, with every chapter raising the stakes and deepening the mystery. The main character’s emotional journey is just as gripping as the supernatural elements, making this book a must-read for anyone who loves haunting, fast-paced stories.

Book Review: From Below by Darcy Coates

I’m working my way through all of Darcy Coates’ books, and From Below was next on my list. With about ten more to go, I’m getting close! This one left me with mixed feelings—while I thoroughly enjoyed the eerie atmosphere and mystery, the pacing made me eager for it to wrap up at times.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is its dual timeline. The story alternates between the present day, where a dive team is exploring the sunken SS Arcadia, and 100 years ago, when the ship was still afloat and heading toward its tragic fate. This back-and-forth storytelling added depth and intrigue, slowly unraveling the ship’s secrets while the divers uncover eerie remnants of the past.

As expected with Coates, the horror elements were well done—claustrophobic, suspenseful, and filled with an unsettling sense of isolation beneath the waves. The deep-sea setting was terrifying in itself, and the supernatural twists kept me hooked. However, the pacing felt uneven. While the slow build helped establish the mystery and tension, there were moments where I found myself waiting for things to move forward a little faster.

Overall, From Below is a solid read for fans of deep-sea horror and ghostly mysteries. It’s atmospheric, chilling, and delivers on its premise, even if it drags in places. Not my favorite Darcy Coates book, but definitely worth reading—especially if you love stories that mix historical tragedy with modern-day investigations.

Following Anna, a detective specializing in missing persons, the story weaves together past trauma, suspense, and a gripping mystery that kept me turning pages late into the night.

McLain does an incredible job balancing psychological depth with a chilling, immersive storyline. The characters felt so real, and the way the book explored loss, survival, and resilience really hit me. I also really loved the spiritual side of this book. It really explored the deceive work of the past The author captured the time in such a picturesque way.

First things first—any book starting with narration by Captain Hook has already earned my interest. #pirateslifeforme. That being said, I have a lot of thoughts, and while my inner petty reader wants to make assumptions about the writing process, I’ll try to keep this focused.

The story has amazing bones. The outline and world-building are solid, and it has all the potential to be an incredible retelling of Peter Pan. However, it falls into a common trap I’ve noticed in some adult reimaginings of classics: relying heavily on erotica to carry the narrative.

When the carnal tension becomes the focal point, there’s less pressure to develop the story, the characters, or their relationships to their full potential. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case here. The erotica elements didn’t enhance the story; instead, they felt unnecessary—like they were added simply to repackage a beloved classic as “spicy” or to cater to a niche audience.

The protagonist could have been an excellent character—a nuanced daughter of Wendy with her own arc and personality—but her promiscuity felt more like a gimmick than a meaningful trait. There’s a fine line between writing adult themes and using sex as a crutch to fill in gaps in storytelling, and this book leaned heavily into the latter.

That said, I want to give credit where it’s due. The structure of the series is strong, and the world-building is immersive. There’s genuine potential here, and it’s clear the authors had a vision. For readers who enjoy smut-heavy retellings, this might be the perfect read. But for me, it felt like a missed opportunity to explore deeper character development and a richer plot.

Ultimately, while I’m proud of myself for stepping outside my comfort zone and exploring new genres, this one just wasn’t for me. The erotic elements didn’t add value to the story, and I found myself wishing the authors had leaned more on their strengths—the vivid world-building and intriguing premise—instead of spicing things up unnecessarily.

If you’re looking for a retelling with strong foundations, Queen of the Lost Boys is worth a look. But if you prefer stories that don’t rely on smut to carry the plot, you might find yourself wishing it had delivered on its potential in other ways.

Would I continue reading similar books? Probably not. Did I enjoy parts of the story and the structure of the series as a whole? Absolutely.

The final book in The Daughters of Eville series is here, and WOW—it’s the perfect ending! This retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses (a story I’m not super familiar with) is full of secrets, danger, self-discovery, and, of course, the most powerful magic of all: love. ❤️
What I loved most was how this book brought everything full circle, celebrating the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. It ties up loose ends beautifully while delivering plenty of suspense and heartfelt moments.
Even though most of the books in this series work as standalones, I’d recommend reading them all—especially since Rumple plays such a big role in this one!

This is my third Darcy C story and while I thought the first two had great detail, and good character development this one was my favorite as it end well. I hate when a story feels like the ending is campy-rushed and hap Hazzard finish.

This one gave some "Rose Red" vibes and twice I gave an eye roll as I saw the ending coming but you know what it didn't go the way I thought and I loved that. Though I found myseld constantly telling the characters to just burn the an house down.

This is a solid spooky read.
