Historia
Forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta has come almost full circle, returning to Virginia, the state where she launched her storied career, as the chief medical examiner. Finding herself the new girl in town once again after being away for many years, she’s inherited both an overbearing secretary and a legacy of neglect and potential corruption.

boring
Revisado: 01-31-22
I loved the early Scarpetta books and was excited for a new one, but this was very disappointing. It is annoying to listen to the voice of the narrator and the story was too passive. Gotta send it back. When a story is good, I listen while I walk my dog. A good book gets me 5 or 6 miles at a time. I just can't stop listening and walking. This one, barely around the block. I kept trying but it just never got better than boring.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

well researched and written in a very readable format; it took my breath away at times; the brave women who made this book possible should be celebrated and supported every single day; the cowards and bullies who made this book possible should be legally prosecuted and penalized; Ronan Farrow is my hero!

Historia
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are the self-styled prince and princess of America. Their swift, gilded rise to extraordinary power in Donald Trump’s White House is unprecedented, unconstitutional, and dangerous. In Kushner, Inc., investigative journalist Vicky Ward digs beneath the myth the couple has created that depicts themselves as the voices of reason in an otherwise crazy presidency and reveals that Jared and Ivanka are not just the president’s chief enablers, they are, like him, disdainful of rules, of laws, and of ethics.

scary but predictable
Revisado: 04-01-19
facts and gossip intertwined which paint a superficial but frightening picture of this “power couple”; the most frightening thing was a quote from Ivanka Trump that reality isn’t important, perception is the only thing that matters; this explains a lot!

Historia
On September 15, 1963, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, was bombed, killing four young girls. Who were the perpetrators? Due to reluctant witnesses and racial prejudice, the FBI closed the case without any indictments. But as Martin Luther King, Jr., claimed, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Bending Toward Justice is a detailed account of this key moment in our national struggle for equality and the long road to prosecuting those responsible for the tragedy, related by an author who played a major role in the investigation.

It reads like a mystery story. It’s engrossing from the first sentence. I listen while I walk my dog and he is exhausted because I found it completely important and horrifying and I couldn’t stop listening.

As a mystery, I loved it. But the mystery story interwoven with the historical facts made it special. So many times, I had to stop and look up the history. I just couldn't believe it was true. Every time it was! How many times can I be surprised? Delightful and fascinating!

Historia
Richard Nixon opens with young navy lieutenant "Nick" Nixon returning from the Pacific and setting his cap at Congress, an idealistic dreamer seeking to build a better world. Yet amid the turns of that now legendary 1946 campaign, Nixon's finer attributes quickly gave way to unapologetic ruthlessness. It is a stunning overture to John A. Farrell's magisterial portrait of a man who embodied postwar American cynicism.

Richard Nixon was a flawed human being
Revisado: 03-10-18
What did you love best about Richard Nixon?
This book describes how a truly brilliant and talented man could feel his own pain but not the pain of others and could commit evil against others and justify those acts because he aspired to be a part of the world politics. He committed crimes as though world prestige absolved him of guilt. Thousands of young men would be alive today if not for the treasonous acts he committed during the Viet Nam War. Looking through the eyes of his daughters he seemed beloved, but misunderstood and persecuted.
WOW, this is an incredible book!

Historia
Does God exist? Do we have a soul? Is it possible to make contact with a spiritual realm? How should we respond to the divine? Will life continue beyond death? Most people, whether deeply religious or outright doubters of any spiritual power, have probably pondered these questions for themselves. In fact, the religious impulse is so powerfully pervasive that neuroscience has posed a provocative question: Are our brains wired to worship?

A WARNING...

questionable stats
Revisado: 04-25-17
Any additional comments?
There were a lot of thought provoking insights but the statistics and studies were not reliable. For example, towards the end of the book, there is a claim that the TM meditation in a study caused a decrease in crime in Washington DC. This was the claim made by the people participating but the data and conclusions were false. Discussing this as if it was a real possibility makes me doubt the other "facts" presented. I am disappointed overall.

Incredible story! Inspirational!
Revisado: 07-10-15
Especially as a 65 year old bleeding heart liberal, I found Ashley's story deeply moving and inspiring. The point is not going to war. Ashley inspires women, men, even old lady's to do the best that we can, to get closer to our potential, to do what others say is not possible. Anyone who was ever told that they couldn't do something needs to read this book. But it not just about wanting to do something others tell you not to or wanting something extraordinary. Ashley's story is about doing what you have to do to be prepared so you can be outstanding at what you want to accomplish. Knowing what you need to do is not enough, you have to do it and do it well.
