We either agree to outlaw and destroy nuclear weapons or we’re doomed. That’s the conclusion I drew from this book. Ms. Jacobson does an excellent job at laying out an extremely plausible scenario. I was surprised with the time frame of a general nuclear exchange. In less than 3 hours we go from riding a gondola on vacation in Venice to the surface of the Planet Mercury. If you can overcome the waves of depression triggered by the contents of this book, it’s worth reading.

This is a worthy addition to the Series. Franklin Horton does not disappoint. Jim Powell and Co. are at their best dealing with the latest two-legged "problem" and resolving the issue in the best traditions of Jim Powell and the code of honor which he applies with a certain "intensity." Well done!

This is book 1 of a three book series by British born Australian author John Birmingham, and it’s well done. Maybe it’s because the author isn’t your standard “Angry American” political right type, but regardless, it’s refreshing.

I take issue with some previous reviews unhappy with the tone of the book being “anti-right.” I found the book to be overall non-political. There’s no liberal female “brown-ish” President to fear or conniving left wing cabinet secretary-operative pulling the clueless lib prez’ strings (as is common in more standard post-apocalyptic yarns on audible) the only concession to politics is the less than shining portrayal of a right wing podcaster character, but that’s just a character in the book, and in good books characters are actually similar to real people, with all the variables that apply. I personally actually like this character and his straight-up viewpoint on life and entertainingly written sexual escapades.

The story is very character driven. You see the looming and then cascading disaster through their eyes and actions. It’s a refreshing change from the standard text where a narrative is imposed on all the characters, who play a supporting role to the overall story. In Zero Day Code, the characters carry the story, which makes for a refreshing change of pace if you’re like me and addicted to this genre.

Overall there’s less violence, at least in book one. As such it’s more realistic, and when violence does occur, it’s more shocking and effective within the story. Mr. Birmingham also does a good job writing the violent scenes, which flow smoothly and are good at establishing who’s who and what’s happening, which is important in an audiobook.

No review would be complete without mentioning the narration, which is fantastic. Rupert Degas is an extremely talented voice. He does one of the best jobs I’ve ever heard in an audiobook voicing the different characters. Accents or gender are no problem for the narrator. That said, the fact that the author and narrator are both “non-Americans” does present some issues. You have to get used to hearing “pavement” as “tarmac.” “Sneakers” as “runners.” The narrator also mispronounces (at least for American ears) words like Maryland as “Mary-land.” The military slang “The Suck” is pronounced “The Sook”…at least twice in book 1. No narration is perfect, although Mr. Degas gets as close as I’ve heard to a flawless performance.

I really enjoyed this book and plan to finish the series.

The Disruption Trilogy is a masterpiece of post-apocalyptic fiction. I read various authors in this genre and have been through all the "big series" and this one is right at the top. The diverse cast of characters is extensive and gets a bit confusing at first but as the different storylines develop they become familiar friends. As always, Narrator Kevin Pierce lives up to his reputation as one of the best, and listening to Kevin Pierce do "gangster slang" in the first book is worth the price of admission all by itself! If you're looking for 40 hours of action and suspense, use your credit on Mr. McDermott's three books, you won't be sorry!

Good first episode, but tarnished by politics

Boyd Craven is a good writer. The premise of this book, although it’s been generally done before, has enough unique characteristics to make it interesting and leaves the reader wanting to know more. In this case it’s 3 couples of childless “professionals” who create a business plan of sorts to buy a big out farm to build into a prepper compound. Fair enough, I’m in.

My only issue is the heavy handed use of current political opinions by the author. The interesting thing here is the character dialogue is pretty much free of political arguments, opinions, and monologues. In some parts of the plot line and mostly in the author’s “voice” however, politics are front and center.

I get it, most people who read these books are conservative types. But there’s also a part of Boyd Craven’s fans who are either independents (like me) or progressives. We’re still preppers, own our share of guns, believe in self reliance, and the traditional values of family, hard work, and self-defense. In cases like this the author’s political opinion can detract from the story, especially when the actual characters are more “middle of the road.” Let me be clear, I could care less if a character is an ultra right militia member or a communist spy set on destroying America. That’s part of a story. My point here is that the writer injects his own politics into an otherwise interesting story. I’d have the same problem regardless of whether that opinion was right or left. It just detracts from the story.

As for the narration, as always, the great Kevin Pierce is singularly magnificent.

What you see is what you get. This third book in the series is a worthy addition to what has become one of the most memorable characters in the post-apocalyptic genre. Straightforward, detailed, and full of action. This is the Franklin Horton trademark and it's at its best in Brutal Business. You'll enjoy it!

Really enjoyed this book. Took some sections with a grain of salt, such as parts of the narrative of Sheeran's WWII experiences, but overall a great listen. The book is worth it just for the Mob nicknames sprinkled throughout, like "Blinky" Palermo and Frank "Three Fingers" Coppola. Honorable mention goes to "Crazy" Joe Gallo. The Narration is very good, although it's sometimes difficult to discern when the narrator is doing Sheeran in a first-person narrative (most of the book) and when the words are those of the author's story narration. I would definitely recommend this book to those interested in what most likely happened to Jimmy Hoffa.

You would figure that a tanker who experienced front line tank combat on two fronts would present a memoir that would be full of battlefield specifics, unique battle descriptions, details of tank operations, descriptions of tank particulars, etc. None of that is really in this book. Apart from a detailed recitation of an early Eastern Front close call where his tank was disabled and he had to hide out from Russians for a couple days, this book is written as more of an outline of places visited and battle outcomes. There are absolutely no descriptions of how the tiger tank actually worked, or how the King Tiger crew did what they did. Battles are included as an afterthought. Most of the book involves name dropping of buddies and commanders known to the author and an overview of where his unit fought. The book is written in a very old-fashioned and stilted manner. Russian attack? "Unpleasant." Russian rocket attack? "Very unpleasant." "Elbow almost blown off?" "Very, very unpleasant"

The greatest detail in the book involves the continuous efforts of the Germans to tow swamp stuck tanks or disabled tanks. I think the author is most proud of his accomplishments in towing various expensive tanks out of soft mud or because of damaged engines or tracks. Towards the end of the book, it seems the only thing the Wehrmacht was doing was towing tanks to safety. Seriously, if you have a tank towing fetish, this is the book of your dreams!

To be fair, for hardcore WW2 buffs like me, it's not a horrible book because there are tidbits of info (mostly about towing tanks) I learned about, but if you're looking for the German version of Brad Pitt's "Fury," this isn't it.

I've always been fascinated by WWII sub warfare. Books like Shadow Divers, Thunder Below, and Silent Running are all non-fiction Sub combat classics which I have in my library. I never considered this fiction version until I found out R.C. Bray was the narrator. He's tops on my list, so I gave Crash Dive a try. It's an excellent set of novels. I really enjoyed them. The Omnibus 3 novel download helped. each novel is relatively short at between 4 and 5 hours, so getting three for 1 credit was great. I just downloaded book 4 "Contact!" and can't wait to get back in the Sub with our protagonist Charlie Harrison!

Great work by Author Craig Dilouie!

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fast-paced buildup to the rest of the series. Don't listen to the reviews that put this book down because it doesn't start off with a nuclear attack and millions dead before the end of chapter one. Having read the blackout series, I was surprised that the author, although clearly leaning to the right politically, was relatively even-handed. I appreciate the effort since I'm probably one of the few liberals you'll ever meet who builds his own AR's, drives an F-250 Diesel and reads prepper fiction.

I finished this book in record time and am halfway through book two. It's a great series. I highly recommend it.
