Historia
Dear Reader, My name is Penelope, and while I may not be a real-life princess, I’ve been told I possess a certain fairy-tale heroine quality. I wield optimism as my weapon of choice, don amazing shoes and vintage hats whenever possible, and speak in musical references. All of which perfectly qualifies me to succeed in my new role as a marketing intern at the historic Darling House theater on the island of Skymar. Only . . . it seems this internship position is going to be a LOT bigger than I thought.

completely tedious
Revisado: 12-19-23
I couldn't get past more than an hour of this book because the entire thing is written as if it's in emails between a girl and her family members. I thought maybe it was just the beginning intro section, so I skipped ahead to check and no it's the whole book. It's maddening.

Eh. Predictable.
Revisado: 04-10-23
A happy story, but somewhat predictable. Lots of unnecessary hijinx leading to an end you'd probably expect. Really unrealistic though and all of the problems could have been prevented in the beginning if they were just honest from the start with their family.

Eh. It was ok.
Revisado: 03-31-23
The narrator was alright but much too weepy and dramatic for most of the story, needed to dial down the emotions a notch. As far as the plot there were a lot of holes: like someone else mentioned who made up the "rules" regarding the zombies, how is the main character the last one left in the entire family line when all the generations before her had so many kids who obviously didn't all stay on the property, and why did it take almost 300 years for anyone to think of doing what she did in the last 30 minutes. A spooky story, but if you think about it too much it just sort of falls apart.

Historia
When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood. Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognizes her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

A loving, delightful fairy tale
Revisado: 10-18-22
This was such a sweet story and so beautifully written. The imagery and vibrant language, each colorful turn of phrase, employed by the author were a sheer joy to listen to. The story is definitely not period-accurate: Modern social ideals and outlooks have been overlaid upon the format of the early-1800s English aristo culture, and it results in a confection of a book that'll leave the reader wistfully thinking how much happier and more fulfilled people would be "if only things really were that way." I quite enjoyed this book.

I see dead people. No, not like that movie. I’m a coroner, and yes it's the kiss of death on my dating life. When men find out what I do, I'm lucky to hear, “It was nice meeting you”. Until I almost accidentally kill Blake Hale with my car. Instead of being freaked out by me, he’s intrigued. No matter how much I try to scare him off, he keeps coming back for more. And for a follow-the-rules guy, he’s breaking them all for me.

OMG this is SO. BAD.
Revisado: 06-22-22
This was such a waste of time. The whole thing is a mess and comes across as if it were written by a 14 year old boy with a serious p0rn habit and a poor grasp of NCIS-esque plot points. Holy cow. So basic, juvenile, so full of toxic manly-man alpha tropes and ignorant stereotypes of a sad sex-hungry vixen who just needs a good lovin' to set her right. One of the main points of the plot is how people think Zoe is sooo terrible and scary because she's a coroner, her coworkers are all oogie boogie about her job and "she must be crazy because OMG DEAD PEOPLE YUCKY...." Come on. Adults in the real world do not talk, behave, or work like this. At all. Skip this please.

So cliche. So bad.
Revisado: 09-17-21
Don't know why I bothered finishing this, but it was such an uninspired slog, listening was a chore. So unrealistic, all the characters are one-dimensional, and every situation having a happy ending made this really dull. No intrigue, no mystery, nothing unique to hold the listener's interest. And it's clear the author knows nothing about business, art, mental health, family law, or even how money works because all references to any of those things are so vague, and in some places outright factually wrong; all the implausible situations make this an eye-rolling story.

Really enjoyed this, can't wait for the next one!
Revisado: 06-28-21
I was surprised how much I really enjoyed this book, it's a sweet and tender love story with an intriguing mystery at the center. Around 2/3 through I was pretty sure I knew the basics behind the haunting but even still, it was an engaging story and makes me feel impatient for the next one in the series to come to Audible. There were a couple of minor holes in the story: I would have liked to have heard what happened to the evidence they found & if police or media got involved, etc because surely those things would've impacted Levi & Blue's lives after solving such a mystery. I hope to hear more about Tom the bookseller in the next one as well. Hurry up and come to Audible, installment #2!

Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 04-21-20
I got 1/4 of the way through this and just had to stop. The author's writing skill is good (witty, keeps your attention, well edited) and the narrator excellent, but the content just turned me off; much too gory and the detail of horrific injuries and the color of injured parts, just ugggghhhhh. The accurate minutiae of living with someone with Alzheimers (down to details like food in her water glass, spit dribbling, etc) was bleak and depressing. And I draw the line at dogs being hurt, so upon reaching that point I realized this story is just making me more disgusted than entertained so I threw in the towel.

Way too religious & completely chaste
Revisado: 02-19-20
Pretty surprised at the good ratings on this: There honestly isn't much redeeming about this book except that it's so short. The storyline and interactions between the characters are completely ridiculous with no complexity at all, their "relationship" is as puritanical and chaste as a children's bible camp (seriously... The main characters have known each other for over 2 years and all they do is kiss a couple of times. In public. Standing up. How exciting.) and the whole thing is sprinkled with religious & churchy references. It's so saccharine and modest, I don't know how this qualifies as a "romance."
