Historia
The site of the old campus bungalow where two girls were brutally slain is now a flower patch covered with chrysanthemums. It's been 50 years since the Immaculate Conception Murders. Three more students and a teacher were killed in a sickening spree that many have forgotten. But there is one person who knows every twisted detail... Hannah O'Rourke and her volatile half-sister, Eden, have little in common except a parent. Yet they've ended up at the same small college outside Chicago, sharing a bungalow with another girl.

Been binging O'Brien novels
Revisado: 09-09-24
I have enjoyed nearly all of them. This one is also good. As others have said the narrator can lay on the emotion a bit too much. I am not as annoyed with her as others, but she can nearly scream at times. I am constantly messing with the volume of my headphones. That is as much a problem of production as the narrator. Symphonies should have dramatic dynamics, not an audiobook.
The story is good. Many of O'Brien's books have excruciatingly stupid characters. This is no different. Given that this is a sequel and the main characters have been traumatized already, they are pretty dumb the second go around. It takes them FOREVER to put obvious pieces together. But I keep listening and I do like the fact that we learn more about the characters. It's fun to follow their development.
Overall, good story. There are only two more novels of his that I haven't listened to. So I'm hooked.

Binging this author - love/hate relationship
Revisado: 09-07-24
What can I say, I am listening to even book this author has on Audible. Pros: I get engaged pretty quickly and am motivated to finished. Hey I'm a plus member and this guy is better than most, Things that are, well super annoying... (1) so many of his characters - across most of his novels - are either stupid or really annoying. Probably truer to life than we would like. But when there are no real sympathetic characters it's an issue.
His books are also longer than they need to be. I dont want to be that person who thinks they could right better than an author... but all of his novels could cut about 3 hours. They kind of drag on. Probably fine if you are actually reading the novel... not sure you need every word in an audio book.
But hey - this is free with plus. I have gone through about every audio book from this author. I have had a good time. I recommend.

Historia
In July 1970, actress Elaina Styles was slain in her rented Seattle mansion along with her husband and their son's nanny. When the baby's remains were found buried in a shallow grave close to a hippie commune, police moved in - only to find all its members already dead in a grisly mass suicide. Now, decades later, a film about the murders is shooting at the mansion. On-set caterer Laurie Trotter ignores gossip that the production is cursed. But then people start dying....

This isn't my favorite from this author
Revisado: 08-10-24
Admittedly, I haven't finished yet. It is good enough to continue to the end. But the story of the murders in the synopsis doesn't happen until about twelve chapters into the story, So far I am amazingly annoyed by the main character. She continues to be honest with someone she clearly doesn't trust. She doesn't act when she is clearly in danger. She tolerates more risk than necessary. Maybe this will get better as the story goes on. But so far, while the main character is sympathetic, I find myself screaming in mind, "OMG! Don't do that!". It reminds me in some ways of the last girl trope - only she's a little stupid..

Historia
Many people have asked why the paths of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper never crossed, since the two men were contemporaries in London in 1888. There have even been some scurrilous suggestions that Holmes was himself the Ripper. The paths of the two men did indeed cross. Holmes and Watson knew precisely who the real Ripper was and even where he lived. They also knew exactly what happened to him. If you have the stomach for it, listen and all will be revealed!

Narration is strangely paced
Revisado: 06-16-24
I had to listen on a slower speed just to be able to follow the story. Even still sentences run together without pause. The narrator seems to be on a race to finish. It substantially distracts from the story (which is just ok). I honestly can't get past the breathless speed reading. A period at the end of a sentence is a lovely thing... you just won't hear them in this one.

Love Lore and other podcasts. This is just ok.
Revisado: 05-08-24
It's not bad, just not good. A lot of cliched phrases which get annoying. The story is relatively good. But once we know who the bad "guy" is there is still an hour left of the book. The action for that last hour is simply ridiculous. If you've listened to the Consumed podcast, you will also recognize the Native American themes. Mehnke does not fall into to NA tropes exactly, but there is a strange fascination there. I think the story would have worked better without that thread.
The main characters are sympathetic. The story can get tense with supernatural elements which is good. But it just doesn't hold together well two thirds in. If it's free - take a listen. It is fun enough. Don't spend money though. All of that said. I love Mehnke's podcasts. Maybe this would be better in that format. I have enjoyed Bridgewater and Consumed which probably aren't that different from Indian Summer in terms of narrative. Maybe the audiobook isn't the best way to experience the story.

Interesting and important story but problematic
Revisado: 06-23-23
The story of Fr. Joe's murder is riveting and hopefully this pod has helped find justice. However, the investigative, production and script quality is really low for a Wondery production.
The hosts reflect far too much on their own experience here (not unusual in true crime podcasting but really annoying). Their narration (the script) is full of cringe-worthy cliches and is at times so bad I would have to fast forward (ex: "he gave me a smarmy sinister vibe" 🤦♀️). The hosts are just young and need more experience. They could use a good writer and editor.
The hosts also lied in order to set up an interview with a Bishop. Maybe this is ok in journalism, I found it really unethical and was again put off by the hosts and their "investigation".
The series is also too long with A LOT of needless reflection and irrelevant information. A good edit, a quality writer would have made this a stellar pod. Clearly the hosts have good rapport with the family and others invested in the case. Interviews with those individuals are the strength of the podcast. There are moments where this is great (a montage of recorded phone messages to the victim - so moving). It's just not consistent.
Overall, I would love to see this remade by the hosts now that I'm sure they have more experience. The case, the interviews, the life and stories of the victim are all there. There are gems. But you just need patience to find them.
