Historia
This is a striking addition to the body of Culture lore, and adds definition and scale to the previous works by using the Earth of 1977 as contrast. The stories in the collection range from science fiction to horror, dark-coated fantasy to morality tale. All bear the indefinable stamp of Iain Banks's staggering talent.

Not high Culture
Revisado: 04-16-25
I really liked the Culture series, but the short stories in this book were hit and miss. I enjoyed a few stories but quite a few were boring at best. This adds an aspect to the Culture series...but I'm not sure I care about that aspect at this point.
The narration was clear and good overall.

Light and Fun
Revisado: 04-16-25
So far, I have liked everything by Leckie a lot. This is part of the Imperial Radch/Ancillary universe. I like the world building, characterization, and the story. This story is light and relatively uncomplicated without the (lovely) dark overtones of the Ancillary series. This is a kind of mystery story with a somewhat hapless protagonist.
I really enjoyed the narration.

Excellent Collection
Revisado: 04-16-25
This includes several stories from the Raven Tower universe and the Imperial Radch universe, along with a handful of standalone stories. So far, I have fully enjoyed everything I have read by Leckie and this was no exception. I had already read everything else from Leckie. Her world building is among the best. The writing is superior. Each of the stories seems designed to be read on its own. Thus, there is quite a bit of repetitive world building in each story of each universe. So, you may want to space out the stories. Not every story is great, but I can’t think of any that disappointed me.
The narration was nuanced and added to the stories.

As a free A.I., Mal finds the war between the modded and augmented Federals and the puritanical Humanists about as interesting as a battle between rival anthills. He’s not above scouting the battlefield for salvage, though, and when the Humanists abruptly cut off access to infospace he finds himself trapped in the body of a cyborg mercenary, and responsible for the safety of the modded girl she died protecting.

Funny, Interesting, Good Story
Revisado: 04-16-25
This is a very pleasant humorous SciFi. The characters are fun, the protagonist is a novel AI with an unusual perspective. The story has a nice balance between plot and action. This is a very fine humor SciFi, but it is not quite as good as Bob.
After reading and enjoying this book, I found the author wrote the book that Micky 17 was based on. I like to read the book before seeing the movie, so that has moved to my next read.
The narration was great with nice character voices.

Historia
For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

Boring Story
Revisado: 04-16-25
The problem here is the writing is good, but it doesn't make this a novel. There are chapters that individually were milding interesting, but by the end of the book didn't really matter. I had hoped for an interesting twist (as the moon chaning into cheese is boring) but nothing interesting ever appeared.
Scalzi has written a number of other SF/humor which were worth three stars and several books and stories that were a solid 5 stars. I just couldn't give this one three stars and it only gets 2 stars because the writing itself is good.
I will continue to read anything by Scalzi.
The narration by Wheaton is solid and tries to help.

Not Interested...
Revisado: 04-16-25
I started this book for a long drive with the family...within one hour the rest of the family vetoed this book.
I later finished it, but it never really improved. When I think back on the story and characters it seemed like an animated feature for kids. The story was quite one dimensional and it plowed forward to a ho-hum ending. The writing seemed just boring, and the narration did not help at all. I don't think I ever had an emotional reaction to anything that happened. I certainly will not go on with this series.

Got steadily worse…
Revisado: 03-13-25
Thw writing is not bad, but I never got into the story or the characters. I did finish it, but I literally had to force myself at the end as I found myself returning to the book less and less often.
I have listened to thousands of audio books, and generally can tolerate any narration.
This was not really bad narration (it is clear and understandable), but I really did not care for the regional accents used by the narrator. There were also some narration pacing issues and the narration may have been a factor in this book seeming boring.

Historia
For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai—ruler of an empire at war with itself. Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.
