This was a waste of money. I regret buying it. It was not helpful at all. Listen to SOAR instead; that helped much more.

Slightly disappointing in places
Revisado: 08-12-24
The extreme liberties the author took to veer away from the original Huck Finn disappointed me. Otherwise, very insightful .

Historia
As one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, Alicia Keys has enraptured the globe with her heartfelt lyrics, extraordinary vocal range, and soul-stirring piano compositions. Yet away from the spotlight, Alicia has grappled with private heartache - over the challenging and complex relationship with her father, the people-pleasing nature that characterized her early career, the loss of privacy surrounding her romantic relationships, and the oppressive expectations of female perfection.

Went off track
Revisado: 05-10-24
I became frustrated with the political tack of this book. I liked parts of it, but reached a point where I wanted to return it because it felt very closed-minded in places and clearly biased about some cultural events, in fact leaving some details out about those figures and occurrences. This was disappointing because in some ways I do admire Alicia and respect her.

Historia
Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one.

Changed my “fan” status to negative
Revisado: 04-14-24
I expected to enjoy this book. I was a fan of Richard Marx during his hey-day as a performer but that book changed my feelings toward him. He is clearly a great songwriter and singer; however, he comes off as arrogant in this book. The first half is really just a name-dropping brag sheet. The second half was better but over all, not great…and I love memoirs.

Mostly a snooze fest

Too sappy for my taste and really lacked character development. I’m not even sure how it ended up in my library unless it was a special at some point.

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Did not enjoy the reader
Revisado: 04-24-23
It was hard for me to decide on a reading for this book, because I really felt like the reader interfered with my enjoyment so much. However, even when I tried to separate the reader from the novel, often I just found myself zoning out and did not find myself really looking forward to listening. Some interesting parts but as many that were not. I didn’t really love the main character so that could be part of the problem as well.

Love the narration and the writing (superb!) but did not like the way the story was written against chronology. I understand why the author did this but it made the stories harder to follow.

Not believable
Revisado: 02-06-23
I was frustrated by this main character and felt sympathy for many of the people who cared for her but were left behind. I didn’t find the storyline very believable in places. It had potential but didn’t measure up.
