Brilliant read, middling narration

Any additional comments?
Orlagh Cassidy is a great reader, but Lee Grant's appeal is a take-no-prisoners style of speaking. When she delivers dialogue, you have to listen. Cassidy reading everything in a breathy, passionate swoon is a disappointment, the wrong direction to tell the tale of a woman who has always been so admirably forthright. Grant's opening and closing narration suggest it might have been a job she wasn't up for, but it's still a missed opportunity.

Along with the sequel book, still one of the greatest of the books I've listened to since joining Audible. Huston's gorgeous, whisky-toned voice combined with her rich memories make for such satisfying listening. Her confidence in recounting everything without judgment or editorializing partly why it's so fulfilling.

Historia
James Joyce's Dubliners is a collection of short stories about the lives of the people of Dublin around the turn of the century. Each story describes a small but significant moment of crisis or revelation in the life of a particular Dubliner, sympathetically but always with stark honesty. Many of the characters are desperate to escape the confines of their humdrum lives, though those that have the opportunity to do so seem unable to take it.

Strong edition, though make sure you read it too

Any additional comments?
Jim Norton's beautiful voice brings a lot of colour to what is already one of the greatest collections of short stories ever written. His choice to read Greta in the conclusion with a nasal pseudo feminine whine is strange, particularly as it ruins the beauty of the best part of the entire thing, but it's still a wonderful listen and richly enjoyable.

Historia
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Another great performance from Meryl Streep
Revisado: 09-17-15
What does Meryl Streep bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her vast experience as an actor is much of what makes the listening to this book so very enjoyable. Though it does help that Ephron's writing is so terrific.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes!

In her first memoir, the Academy Award-winning actress Sophia Loren tells her incredible life story from the struggles of her childhood in war-torn Naples to her life as a screen legend, icon of elegance, and devoted mother. In her acting career spanning more than six decades, Sophia Loren became known for her striking beauty and dramatic roles with famed costars Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, and Paul Newman.

Worthwhile for anyone who doesn't know the details
Revisado: 08-26-15
What did you like best about Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow? What did you like least?
I really enjoyed the stories of working on films, the process on set, the development of her own talent as an actor, and the memories of all the actors she worked with. The downside is there is a sense of her not wanting to be rude or gossipy and she stays on the surface of most of her relationships personal or professional: in life this is one of her great qualities, but it doesn't make for compelling reading (or listening in this case).
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
A sweet feeling of satisfaction.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cassandra Campbell?
Campbell made me wish I had read the book instead. She's good at her job, but her wispy voice and slightly pretentious manner of pronouncing Italian words is at odds with the fiery and bold voice that Loren always spoke with (and writes with here). It's a shame to not have the book read by the author and I recommend people enjoy this one on the page.
Was Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow worth the listening time?
No.
