Top class—just like every other Len Deighton book! The only drawback to this book is knowing that there is now one fewer of his books left for me to enjoy.

But I didn’t. Like all of Ludlum’s novels, it is full of repetitive themes and unbelievable plot-twists. However, it is an entertaining listen and if you are a fan of Ludlum, then it is worth the listen.

I had avoided this one for a long time because I have watched the film a couple of times and it’s apparently not possible to find an audiobook version of the original Bourne identity. So if you are like me, don’t let that deter you any longer because the book has almost nothing in common with the film. It takes place almost entirely in China, Hong Kong and Macao.

I find the narrator’s voice to be annoying at times, and I have no idea why he gives a french accent to a character raised on a ranch in Alberta. People from that part of Canada DO NOT have French accents!

is awesome! Similar in its simplistic yet illustrious manner to Fitzgerald and Hemingway. He makes you feel the personalities of the characters and the atmosphere of the places they live and travel without the verbosity of some of his contemporaries. Another excellent book!

Very well researched but I can understand how some readers/listeners could find it intricate and thus tedious at times. It is a WW2 spy novel at its core but much more than that. This was the first Alan Furst book that I ever read when I was younger and at the time it seemed like another WW2 spy novel to me. When I listened to it 15 years later I noticed a lot more the focus on the main character’s coming-of-age journey as he is taken from a small Bulgarian hamlet to Moscow where he is trained in clandestine operations and then sent westward to Europe. This time it seemed to me to be more of a story about friendship, camaraderie, idealism, treachery that are borne out of politics and warfare. If you plan to read the rest of the Alan Furst books then you should read this because they all (or mostly all…it’s been a while) make references to events in this one.

The start was a bit tedious, but also necessary to the plot, but once you get through that its totally engrossing and well written.

Somewhat predictable but nonetheless entertaining. A bunch of incredibly convenient coincidences in the plotline, for example the lead character is an architect and by a stroke of dumb luck has experience using a gun; has taken self-defense classes; and a few other things that come to mind. There are a lot of loose ends that are never tied up either, but if you are looking for something that is entertaining for a road trip or just everyday listening then I would certainly recommend it.
