Can’t stand the RHCP-loved this
Revisado: 05-02-23
I’m a sucker for a rock bio, so picked it up even though the RHCP music does nothing for me. Absolutely blow away by his prose, his outlook on life and the jazz-like flow of memories and structure.
It’s an incredibly life affirming book, with lots of great 70s and 80s punk rock thrown in as a happy bonus. I saw one review saying it was “woe is me”. Far from it.
If you liked “Just Kids” by Patti Smith, pick this up.
Well worth a credit.

Historia
Best known for his hysterically funny and often scathing restaurant reviews for the London Sunday Times, journalist Adrian Gill writes about his near-fatal alcoholism in this extraordinary lucid memoir. By his early 20s, at London's prestigious Saint Martin's art school, Gill was entrenched in his addiction. He writes from the handful of memories that remain, of drunken conquests with anonymous women, of waking to morbid hallucinations, of emptying jacket pockets that "were like tiny crime scenes".

Interesting memoir-AWFUL narration
Revisado: 01-16-23
The compelling story is butchered by the reader’s inability to correctly pronounce everyday words. And the pronunciation of standard British locations and names is worse.
Wish I’d read this in print-it’s well written.

Historia
WeWork would be worth $10 trillion, more than any other company in the world. It wasn’t just an office space provider. It was a tech company - an AI startup, even. Its WeGrow schools and WeLive residences would revolutionize education and housing. One day, mused founder Adam Neumann, a Middle East peace accord would be signed in a WeWork. The company might help colonize Mars. And Neumann would become the world’s first trillionaire.

Great companion to "Billion Dollar Loser"
Revisado: 08-14-21
I really enjoyed "Billion Dollar Loser", so I had some trepidation about "The Cult of We". On the one hand, I wanted more of the story. On the other, I was worried that it would be duplicative.
The two books are actually complimentary: "Billion Dollar Loser" focuses more on the cult of Adam Neumann and examples of his ego and rage-inducing narcissism, while "The Cult of We" focuses more on the financial side of the debacle. "The Cult of We" also goes into great detail on startup financing and all of the related craziness of the last 20 years. I could see "The Cult of We" as a standard textbook in MBA programs.
Fast pace, great narration. Really enjoyed it.

Not my favorite in the series so far
Revisado: 09-08-20
I love this series and the wonderful narrator. This one though was a bit dry-it tried for political intrigue alongside the usual thrill ride and missed the mark. That said, I'm hooked and will continue on with the series.

A great potential story for the telling, great characters, great narration, and yet...it just plodded along. Just compelling enough to stick with, but considered giving up a few times. Fans of Boardwalk Empire will find much that's familiar here-otherwise can't really recommend.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

The result of this Roger Daltrey's introspection is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961.

Great antidote to Pete's pretentious & boring bio
Revisado: 12-29-18
Huge Who and Pete Townshend fan, I was so let down by his autobiography. It was dull and pretentious. Daltrey's autobiography is a wonderful alternative: breezy, self-effacing and honest. It's not "War and Peace", but if you like rock bios and love The Who, this one's worth a listen. Also loved his narration.

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid
Revisado: 04-19-18
Would you try another book from Christine Mangan and/or Barrie Kreinik and Erin Mallon ?
Never in a million years. No plot, ridiculous, unlikeable characters. A Harlequin romance trying to be edgy.
Has Tangerine turned you off from other books in this genre?
This is no Mr. Ripley.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Barrie Kreinik and Erin Mallon ?
Whoever played "Lucy" clearly has a relative in the casting department. ANYONE but her.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Tangerine?
The scene where the author sits down at her computer to type this book.
Any additional comments?
This is the single most annoying audible book I've come across, and I've had some lemons. It's boring, relatively predictable and full of every cliche in the world. And the horrendous, grating narration puts it over the top. Not really a fan of this book, if it hasn't been clear.
